La Cantata Criolla: Una experiencia inolvidable con el Maestro Izcaray

Este post me lo tomo para compartirles​ la increíble fortuna de participar en un Concierto de la Cantata Criolla de Antonio Estévez bajo la batuta del gran Maestro Felipe Izcaray el 10 de julio de este año en San Felipe, Estado Yaracuy. Pero más allá del evento en sí, quiero profundizar en la perspectiva personal que viví esa noche, una que tocó mi fibra más sensible. ​Suelo ser alguien que se concentra en lo tecnico durante el concierto, en que cada nota esté en su lugar y que la interpretación sea impecable. Pero esa noche, algo cambió.

I'm taking advantage of this post to share with you the incredible fortune of participating in a concert of Cantata Criolla by Antonio Estévez under the baton of the great maestro Felipe Izcaray on July 10th of this year in San Felipe, Yaracuy State. But beyond the event itself, I want to delve into the personal perspective I experienced that night, which struck a chord with me. I am usually a person who concentrates on the technical aspects of the concert, that every note is in its place and that the performance is impeccable. But that night, something changed.

antes del concierto, mientras repasábamos la partitura, el Maestro Izcaray se nos acercó. No para dar instrucciones técnicas, sino para contarnos de forma sencilla y emotiva sus momentos con el compositor. ​Nos habló de la genialidad de Estévez, pero no de la que está en los libros. Nos contó cómo era su amistad, la forma en que Estévez se acercaba a la música como si fuera un relato oral, casi como un cuentacuentos. Describió el proceso de composición de la Cantata, no como una labor matemática, sino como un acto de amor y profundo respeto por la historia de Florentino y el Diablo. Nos contó la historia de ese primer estreno, los nervios, la emoción, el peso de la obra.

Before the concert, while we were going through the score, Maestro Izcaray approached us. Not to give technical instructions, but to tell us in a simple and emotional way about his moments with the composer. He spoke to us of Estévez's genius, but not the kind that is in the books. He told us about their friendship, the way Estévez approached music as if it were an oral story, almost like a storyteller. He described the process of composing the Cantata, not as a mathematical task, but as an act of love and deep respect for the story of Florentino y el Diablo. He told us the story of that first premiere, the nerves, the emotion, the weight of the work.

Fue como si de repente, la partitura que teníamos en las manos dejara de ser un simple conjunto de notas y se convirtiera en un diario de vivencias. Las anécdotas del Maestro Izcaray le dieron a cada compás un alma, un rostro y un pasado. Cuando llegó el momento de salir a escena, ya no éramos un coro y una orquesta; éramos narradores de una historia que nos había sido

It was as if suddenly the score in our hands was no longer a simple set of notes but a diary of experiences. Maestro Izcaray's anecdotes gave each bar a soul, a face and a past. When the time came to go on stage, we were no longer a choir and an orchestra; we were narrators of a story that had been entrusted to us.

​Al interpretar la Cantata, cada vez que cantaba sobre la "pampa llana", pensaba en las descripciones que el Maestro nos dio. Cada vez que venía el duelo musical entre Florentino y el Diablo, sentía no solo el poder de la música, sino también la intención original del compositor, contada a través de los ojos de alguien que lo vió

When performing the Cantata, every time I sang about the "pampa llana", I thought of the descriptions the Maestro gave us. Every time the musical duel between Florentino and the Devil came, I felt not only the power of the music, but also the original intention of the composer, told through the eyes of someone who knew him.

La experiencia me recordó que la música es mucho más que sonido. Es historia, amistad y un legado que se transmite de persona a persona. Esta noche con el Maestro Izcaray me hizo ver la música de una forma nueva, más personal y más humana. ​Gracias por leer esta reflexión.

The experience reminded me that music is much more than sound. It is history, friendship and a legacy that is passed on from person to person. This evening with Maestro Izcaray made me see music in a new, more personal and more human way. Thank you for reading this reflection.
