[ENG/ ESP] My wooden and rope friend / Mi amigo de madera y cuerdas

Mucha gente se engancha a un cantante o a un grupo, pero yo me clavé con un instrumento. Y no solo me clavé con su música, sino que me armé de valor y empecé a estudiar como nunca. Y, de verdad, tener un violonchelo o ser interprete de instrumentos de cuerdas es un tema totalmente diferente.

A lot of people get hooked on a singer or a band, but I got hooked on an instrument. And not only did I get hooked on their music, but I got up the courage and started studying like never before. And, really, having a cello or being a stringed instrument player is a totally different matter.

​Mi relación con este instrumento no fue amor a primera vista. Me acuerdo de los primeros días. Mi violonchelo y yo éramos como dos desconocidos tratando de convivir. Los dedos me dolían, el arco se sentía raro, y el sonido que salía era... bueno, era una prueba de paciencia para mí y para mis vecinos. Pero en esos momentos de bajón, había unos destellos, una nota que sonaba perfecta, un pasaje que por fin me salía. Y eso era suficiente para no rendirme aunque lo pensé bastantes veces debido a mi inactividad y en momentos en los que no me salía algo bien.

My relationship with this instrument was not love at first sight. I remember the early days. My cello and I were like two strangers trying to live together. My fingers hurt, the bow felt strange, and the sound coming out was.... well, it was a test of patience for me and my neighbours. But in those down moments, there were a few glimmers, a note that sounded perfect, a passage that finally came out. And that was enough for me not to give up even though I thought about it quite a few times because of my inactivity and at times when I didn't get something right.

Ahora, mi chelo es parte de mi casa y de mi rutina. No es un adorno. Las cuerdas gastadas y las marquitas en la madera no son defectos; son el resultado de horas de ensayo, de conciertos con los nervios de punta y de momentos de paz tocando en mi cuarto. Cada una de esas marcas me recuerda las batallas que hemos librado juntos.

Now, my cello is part of my home and my routine. It is not an ornament. The worn strings and the little marks on the wood are not flaws; they are the result of hours of rehearsal, nerve-wracking concerts and peaceful moments playing in my room. Each of these marks reminds me of the battles we have fought together.

La música del chelo pasó de ser algo que escuchaba a algo que vivo. Es mi forma de comunicarme sin palabras. Si ando de mal humor, el chelo me ayuda a sacar esa energía. Si estoy contento, puedo transmitir esa alegría a través de las cuerdas. No hay nada como el sentimiento de conectar con la música que tú mismo estás creando.

Cello music went from being something I listened to to something I live. It's my way of communicating without words. If I'm in a bad mood, the cello helps me to get that energy out. If I'm happy, I can transmit that joy through the strings. There is nothing like the feeling of connecting with the music you yourself are creating.
