To be able to feel it we need 'a mirror of the heart'.
I don't know how it really happens but whenever for one reason or another I fall prey to despair or anguish, through Buddhist recitation I can hear this heavenly music reflected in my heart, feeling great happiness, a happiness independent of the external environment, different from euphoria. Even love for another person can be a mirror of the phenomenal heart that reflects back to them what we are.
Andrea lives on this hill in the company of a work colleague who is in love with him. Thanks also to her love, he has managed to neutralise all those thoughts crowding his mind. For most of our lives we are busy filling our minds with words, thoughts, reasoning, fears, actions, beliefs, precisely to escape the celestial sound, the Cosmic Background Radiance. In moments of great suffering, all this stuffing of thoughts and daily worries disappears, in those moments our attention is focused on a single thought, our
problem. The sense of resignation and helplessness allow us to discover that certain thoughts or objects that seem to be indispensable, are in fact not. Certain dependencies that we believe to be important are no longer so. In these moments we discover that the important things in life can be counted on the fingers of one hand and they all revolve around the relationship between us and others.
We find ourselves vulnerable and naked, all the protections we assiduously seek outside become useless.
I believe this is Andrea's answer to that why. An answer that comes by itself, implicit in the question, that makes suffering valuable.
In reality, it is not the suffering that is precious but our reaction to it. A reaction that, balanced between guilt and gratitude, frees us from conditioning. We often convince ourselves that it is the external facts that make us suffer and that only by cursing them and chasing them away can we overcome them. How many times have I cried, have we suffered, alone because of others?

... momenti più bui della nostra esistenza, ci fa ritrovare l’amore dentro di
noi.
Per riuscire a sentirla abbiamo bisogno di “uno specchio del cuore”.
Non so come avvenga realmente ma ogni qualvolta che per una ragione o per un’altra sono preda della disperazione o dell’angoscia, attraverso la recitazione buddista riesco a sentire riflessa nel cuore questa musica celestiale, provando una grande felicità, una felicità indipendente dall’ambiente esterno, diversa dall’euforia. Anche l’amore per un’altra persona può essere uno specchio del cuore fenomenale che riflette su di lei ciò che siamo.
Andrea abita su questa collina in compagnia di una collega di lavoro innamorata di lui e della quale lui è innamorato. Grazie anche al suo amore è riuscito a neutralizzare tutti quei pensieri che affollavano la mente. Per la maggior parte della nostra vita siamo occupati a riempirci la mente di parole, pensieri, ragionamenti, paure, azioni, convinzioni, proprio per sfuggire al suono celestiale, al Cosmic Background Radiance. Nei momenti di grande sofferenza viene meno tutta questa farcitura di pensieri e di preoccupazioni quotidiane, in quei momenti la nostra attenzione si concentra su un unico pensiero, il nostro
problema. Il senso di rassegnazione e d’impotenza ci permettono di scoprire che certi pensieri o oggetti che sembrano essere indispensabili, in realtà non lo sono. Certe dipendenze che crediamo essere importanti non lo sono più. In questi momenti scopriamo che le cose importanti della vita si contano sulle dita di una mano e ruotano tutte intorno al rapporto tra noi e gli altri.
Ci ritroviamo vulnerabili e nudi, tutte le protezioni che assiduamente ricerchiamo all’esterno diventano inutili.
Credo è questa la risposta di Andrea a quel perché. Una risposta che vien da sola, implicita nella domanda, che rende la sofferenza preziosa.
In realtà non è la sofferenza a essere preziosa ma la nostra reazione a essa. Una reazione che, in equilibrio tra il senso di colpa e quello di gratitudine, ci libera dai condizionamenti. Spesso ci convinciamo che siano i fatti esterni a farci soffrire e che soltanto maledicendoli e scacciandoli si potranno superare. Quante volte ho pianto, abbiamo pianto, abbiamo sofferto, da soli a causa degli altri?
