The Way We Were - for TTT #203

It's a kind of magic how music brings back long-forgotten memories; not much else in life has that kind of power!

I also cannot imagine a world without music, and will be going down memory lane to share some Barbra Streisand with you. This legendary actress and singer ranks as one of the best female artists of all time, not surprisingly, as there haven't been many female singers with such powerful vocals.

I'm a sucker for love stories, and the 1973 romantic drama The Way We Were had me bawling way back in the 70s. When two opposites fall in love, there's sure to be drama. The strong attraction between Katie and Hubbel sadly wasn't enough to overcome their opposing socio-political ideals, and that is what ultimately ends their love story. The lyrics of Barbara's signature song The Way We Were, speak of...

Misty water-coloured memories
Of the way we were...

Is that not how memories become? Faded over time, although some never fade, and I guess those are the ones we value most.

If you're a Barbra fan, you're sure to enjoy the song and an extract from a scene in the movie.

Onto a collaboration like no other. The song You Don't Bring Me Flowers, sung as solos by Barbra and Neil Diamond, was turned into a 'duet' in WGN radio studios by an engineer and a record turner. The albums were played on two turntables, starting with Barbra's vocals and Neil's voice overlapping hers, their voices blended beautifully, and the outcome was magical.
The song was first aired in 1978 on WGN Radio's Roy Leonard Show, and eventually went Platinum.
Neil and Barbra brought the house down at the 22nd Annual Grammy Awards in 1980 when they made a surprise appearance and performed the duet for the very first time 'Live.'

Send in the Clowns was written by the great musical theatre composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim, specifically for Glynis Johns to sing in the 1973 musical A Little Night Music.
Here is Barbra's rendition of this melancholic song, a bittersweet ballad reflecting on the disappointments in life.

Here is a very different version for the psychological thriller Joker, featuring the song as performed by Frank Sinatra.

Fun fact - 'Send in the Clowns' also has become a phrase used in show business to bring a kind of comic relief!

Thank you @ablaze for Three Tunes Tuesday, giving us the opportunity to share three tunes with the Hive community! Check what it's all about in Lisa Hannigan for Three Tune Tuesday - Week 203 - win 5 HBI.

I kind of got carried away with Barbra, threw in Sinatra at the end, but still only shared three tunes! I hope there are Streisand fans listening, and that you enjoyed the music!

I read somewhere long ago that Barbara didn't like to hear herself sing. She didn't like her own voice. Now... it's been so long I have to wonder if she really said that or not. I just remember being surprised by it.

I used to enjoy her movies too.

That's weird. If it's true, perhaps she's just critical of her voice?
I don't think there are many singers with a voice like hers; the movies were also great!
Hope you're keeping well Jacey!

Beautifully written! Barbra Streisand's "The Way We Were" perfectly captures the bittersweet nature of fading memories and the enduring power of love, even when circumstances tear people apart. The song's enduring popularity is a testament to its emotional resonance.

Ummm, nope, that's not possible then. I was still longing to be a teen when you were born. My mind still thinks I'm young, so I get a fright when I look in the mirror😅

This post is so delightful, full of memories. I'm also very silly and cry a lot during dramas. In fact, you've made me want to see Barbra perform again. I'll be looking for some movies and will definitely watch this one again.

Greetings!
