Stuck in The Swinging 60s for Three Tunes Tuesday - week 191

The 1960s for sure was an exciting time in the music world. I was still a tween at the birth of that era which gave us bands like The Beatles, as I shared with you last week. It was the beginning of a music revolution that changed the world forever!

My song choices for this week have all become classics.

The House of the Rising Sun by The Animals

Stepping back to the year 1964 when this song by the British rock band The Animals became the first folk-rock hit.

The House of the Rising Sun was played for many years by local cover bands back home at what we called 'Sessions,' weekly teen events held in the local town hall with wanna-be rock stars on stage. We did The Twist, and shook our heads to The Shake, and those without boy- or girlfriends eyed each other. Of course, girls had to wait to be asked to dance; heart fluttering if your heart-throb casually walked in your direction, but heartbreaking when he walked right past heading for someone else or chickened out and stalked out the hall!
Time to stop talking and get to the music!

Turn Turn Turn by The Byrds - 1965

Animal names were popular, many misspelled, likely influenced by The Beatles - The Monkees, and Steppenwolf. Across the waters, the American folk rock band The Byrds had many hits. 1965 brought my absolute favourite Turn! Turn! Turn! which also features in the fabulous movie Forrest Gump with Tom Hanks and Robin Wright.

This rendition was played on The Ed Sullivan Show, where you hear girls screaming in the background. In the 60s some young girls would get swept up and faint with excitement at rock shows ;)

Unchained Melody by The Righteous Brothers - 1965

Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield of course weren't brothers.
Bobby sings a cover of this hauntingly beautiful ballad. Bill jokingly said he didn't think it was going to be a hit, so he let Bobby sing it while he stood in a corner :)
The song also featured in the 1990 supernatural romance movie Ghost, which had many moviegoers in tears!
