Highs, Lows, and Everything in Between!

Did I scold myself for being such a naughty old gal!

My fabulous holiday at the kiddos in the Netherlands came to an end after almost six weeks. I had never seen and experienced so much in such a short space of time.

Being reluctant to leave, I left packing to the last minute, I did not take too much with me after all. I don't know about you, but travelling for many hours with hardly any legroom, is not for me. I tried squashing the bare essentials into a smaller bag so I did not have to place my bulky daypack by my feet.
That's when things started going wrong, but I'll tell you about that a little later;)

My son, his gal, and I, often sat with our heads glued to our PC screens on our rest days, kind of anti-social socializing with chitter-chatter in between. We were just enjoying the togetherness, and fortunately are on the same wavelength, if you know what I mean.

Hauser - Rebel with a Cello

My son had spoken of wanting to take me to a live concert, and while I was listening to Hauser on YouTube, he discovered that Hauser was performing at the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam on the last Sunday of my stay, so duly booked tickets.
It was drizzling that night, and we were travelling by train, with an approximately 20-minute walk to the venue. It started raining heavily, most unusual for the Netherlands, it felt like I was back in Durban, as it came down in buckets.

Needless to say, our shoes were drenched, as were our socks, so there was much squishing and squashing as we walked into the Ziggo Dome. We both headed for the loos to try and get our feet a tad dryer, quite a job, but we weren't the only ones!

We did not get to strike a pose in front of Hauser though, it became too crowded by the time we had rescued our shoes!

Walking through that rain was so worth it, as the show was absolutely fantastic, and, it did not rain when we walked back to the train station afterwards!

Autumn leaves

All good things come to an end, so it was a sad goodbye to my view of the trees with their autumn leaves.

The Bag was to Blame

We were enjoying a leisurely sandwich and coffee before check-in, so I casually checked if I had everything I needed in my bag, but, my Asthma pump, the one thing I may, or may not need, was missing!
I had not transferred that very important item into my daypack, but it was too late as the smaller bag was inside the checked-in suitcases.

Of course when in a hurry, the place you need to go to, will always be on the furthest side, so my son and I had to almost run to get to a pharmacy at the very end of Schiphol Airport, as it was almost time to check-in.

20231101_175452.jpg

Here in SA, that pump can be bought over the counter, but the pharmacist advised that in the Netherlands, one needs a doctor's prescription, and directed us to the airport medical services.

That Asthma pump ended up costing 78 Euro including the doctor's consultation whereas here in SA it would have cost me around ZAR 40, around 2 Euro!
Yep, I was flabbergasted that I forgot, but my son in his usual calm manner, insisted on paying, and said it gave us an opportunity to have one last walk together;)
At a cost though! I will try to claim from travel insurance, so will see how that pans out, and yes, it was in that red bag after all!

Six weeks gone by kind of quickly but it's good to read you had a wonderful time. And what a great way to culminate your stay through a concert :)

It's good that you still had time to walk to the pharmacy for the inhaler. But oh my, they charge a lot more in the airport!

It was an absolute treat from beginning to end, and the concert was the highlight for sure. Never thought I would see Hauser perform in person, and experience the amazing atmosphere in the concert hall,
I nearly freaked when the pharmacist said they do not sell it over the counter, as I knew that was going to cost quite a bit!

Best to have it, if only for your peace of mind (funny how rattled we get when we don't have that essential one thing in our arsenal, you know? (Insane prices, though. Also seems insane not to let you purchase it without prescription. Like, what are you gonna do with one "ill-gotten" one?)

Hauser is wonderful -- I love the cello! Thank you for introducing me to him, and glad you had a beautiful time on your travels!

Yep, I was rattled indeed, and more so when told I had to get a doctor's prescription! I can go for days without using that pump, but it is a lifesaver when needed. My son had told me that they're ultra-strict with meds over there.

Like, what are you gonna do with one "ill-gotten" one?)

Yep, crazy!

Hauser was one of the highlights I would say, but the Netherlands is a fascinating country!
Always nice seeing you @honeydue!

Robin and I were just talking the other day, wondering if you had made it home yet. I'm sure that this was the trip of a lifetime, one that you will remember forever.

Your son and daughter-in-law sound like wonderful, loving, and very generous people. It's got to provide you with a lot of security knowing that they would do whatever it takes to care for their mom.

What a way to end such a splendid getaway. Despite getting drenched, the concert had to be one of the highlights of your time in the Netherlands. I watched and listened to the clip you included. I absolutely loved it, so much so that I've been listening to Hauser for the past hour while on the computer. He can play the heck out of the cello, a string instrument that I must admit that I never realized even existed. When I first saw him playing it I thought that because of the instrument's size, it was a stand-up base. After the first couple of notes, I knew it was not that instrument, The sounds it produced hooked me.

Now that you are back home again, don't run yourself ragged trying to catch up on all that likely needs to be addressed. Have yourself a few cups of that delicious coffee you make, sit back, and relive the great times you spent while in the Netherlands.

All of our love Robin and Bob.

You've hit the nail on the head Bob, it was an unforgettable trip, and I was so totally spoilt. I am truly blessed as they both are the most generous souls and planned everything so well to give Mom the time of her life!
I still have a ton of memories to share of other towns and cities.

My son and I laughed about walking into the Ziggo Dome with our waterlogged shoes. I was worried about the memory foam, but it fared really well :)
Hauer's music is such a treat, I stumbled on him while listening to classics on YouTube. His concert in Budapest is almost identical to what we heard, I really hope they make the one in Amsterdam available as well, the sound was absolutely fabulous!

I have been taking it relatively easy, not letting the legalities of winding up the estate get to me, it will just have to run its course!

Thank you to both you and Robin for being such caring friends, much love to both of you!

I hope to see some of the other good times you had while trucking around the Netherlands.

So the memory foam bounced back pretty well, I wish I could say the same about my memory. 😁

It will run its course and that's a great mind set to have going into it all. Slow and steady does win the race.

Being back home I hope brings you much comfort as you continue to deal with all that is on your plate.

Much love.

It was awesome, even though our shoes were waterlogged from the rain that night! That costly pump needs to be locked away in a safe.
I miss the Netherlands and the kids, hope to go back next year, we must make a plan to meet up again, maybe your Mom and I can coordinate our visit so we can also meet in person. It was great meeting you and Eden.
