Hola, hivers. Hace un tanto no comparto contenido sobre música, pero acá estoy de vuelta aprovechando el siempre acogedor marco del #TTT. Antes, quiero compartirles una foto de mi hijo Manuel Ignacio con uno de los dos instrumentos de percusión —a pequeña escala— que le hemos comprado recién mi esposa @wisleidys y yo. No lo quiero forzar a sus tempranos cuatro años, pero me parece que se puede lograr algo con él en el camino de la música 😄. En la foto lo pueden ver en la tarima de un recinto ferial muy popular aquí en La Habana, y adonde subió justo después de terminado un concierto. Todo indica que no se siente indiferente en ese ambiente, porque estrenó su tambor por unos minutos con mucha naturalidad, y de hecho captó la atención de un camarógrafo de la televisión cubana que cubría el evento —que ya había recogido su equipamiento—, lo que derivó luego en una agradable sorpresa cuando nos avisaron que esa toma había salido como parte de un reportaje cultural en el noticiero estelar de la televisión aquí.

Hello, hivers. It's been a while since I've shared content about music, but here I am again, taking advantage of the always-welcoming #TTT initiative. First, I want to share with you a picture of my son Manuel Ignacio with one of the two percussion instruments —small scale— that my wife @wisleidys and I recently bought him. I don't want to force him in his early four years, but it seems to me that something can be achieved with him in the way of music. In the photo, you can see our son on the stage of a very popular fairground here, where he went up right after a concert was over. He didn't feel indifferent in that environment, because he premiered his drum for a few minutes, and caught the attention of a Cuban television cameraman covering the event —who had already picked up his equipment—, which later resulted in a pleasant surprise when we were told that this shot had been part of a cultural report on the star TV news program here.

Post Malone

He comentado que en materia de gusto musical no discrimino nada por defecto. Todo pasa para mí por tres elementos principales: melodía, ritmo, y virtuosismo. Si a esa tríada se le suma una buena letra —cuando la propuesta musical la incluye—, fetén, aunque soy flexible y trato de entender lo que pueden aportar en este sentido el reggaetón o el rap, por ejemplo. Lo primero que escuché de Austin Post fue “rockstar”, y desde entonces hasta acá me ha interesado mucho su oferta como artista, sobre todo por su dimensión melódica y la amplitud de géneros en los que se puede desdoblar (cuando expuse mi gusto por su trabajo muchos amigos que me conocen por otras influencias musicales rasgaron sus vestiduras). Pero, además, si recuerdan mis anteriores incursiones en el #TTT saben que me gusta siempre compartir música que se hace en directo, sin playback, cuando el cantante es sincero y respeta al público. Malone cumple esto casi al 100%, siempre se arriesga —y casi siempre gana aun cuando sus canciones tienen registros complejos—, y como todo buen artista musical, su performance directo deja mejor sabor que el frío resultado del CD.

I have said that in matters of musical taste, I do not discriminate anything by default. For me, everything goes through three main elements: rhythm, melody, and virtuosity. If a good lyric is added to that triad —when the musical proposal includes it—, great, although I am flexible and try to understand what reggaeton or rap, for example, can contribute in this sense. The first thing I heard from Austin Post was "rockstar", and since then I have been very interested in his offerings as an artist, especially for his melodic dimension and the breadth of genres in which he can unfold (when I exposed my taste for his work many friends who know me for other musical influences tore their garments). But, also, if you remember my previous forays into #TTT, you know that I always like to share music that is performed live without playback, when the singer is sincere and respects the audience. Malone fulfills this 100%, he always takes risks —and almost always wins even when his songs have complex registers, where before seeing the live performance of any particular one I sometimes wonder: "Will he get there?"—, and like any good musical artist, his live performance leaves a better taste than the cold CD result.

Hollywood´s Bleeding

Este tema simplemente es de esos que tiendo a “quemar”. O sea, que conecto tanto con ellos que los escucho en modo repeat hasta que tengo que darles un descanso. Tiene una historia (las trampas de un lugar presuntamente idílico como Hollywood para las relaciones personales y con uno mismo, que puede ser “tóxico” pero al mismo tiempo imanta), me fascina la melodía, y además tiene un ritmo pegajoso, un beat sobre el que Malone también deja ver su vena de rapero (su relación con el hip-hop, por cierto, ha sido polémica). El video es de un concierto, y he configurado el enlace para que les salga justo en el momento que arranca la canción referida. Inmediatamente después viene otro clásico de Malone altamente recomendado (“Better now”).

This song is simply one of those that I tend to "burn". That is, I connect with them so much that I listen to them on repeat until I have to give them a rest. It has a story (the pitfalls of a supposedly idyllic place like Hollywood/Los Angeles for personal relationships and with oneself, which can be "toxic" but at the same time captivating), I love the melody, and it also has a catchy rhythm, a beat on which Malone also lets his rapper streak show (his relationship with hip-hop, by the way, has been controversial). The video is from a concert, and I've set the link to pop up just as the song starts. Right after comes another highly recommended Malone classic ("Better Now").

Reputation

La canción que más me gustó de su penúltimo disco (“Twelve Carat Toothache”), sobre todo por la melodía, pero, además, también por el texto, que contiene metáforas potentes sobre la relación de un cantante de talla mundial como él con sus seguidores, y al mismo tiempo comenta varias características de su personalidad. Como dije arriba, Post no se arredra, esta pista es exigente musicalmente hablando, y para mí la rompe.

The song I liked the most from his penultimate album ("Twelve Carat Toothache"), mainly because of the melody, but also because of the text, which contains powerful metaphors about the relationship of a world-class singer like him with his fans, and at the same time comments on several characteristics of his personality. As I said above, Post doesn't shy away, this track is musically demanding, and for me, it breaks it.

Something real

Este es Posty en toda su extensión. La pista es una suerte de guía para entender su vida, aquello que lo activa o lo hace feliz. Una de las razones por las que arriba dije que mis colegas se rasgaron las vestiduras cuando supieron que escuchaba a Post Malone, es porque es conocido que ha tenido problemas con el alcohol y se critica su extravagancia, pero eso no lo descalifica desde mi perspectiva, si acaso lo humaniza. Post pide algo real, pero así se ofrece él también, real, sincero, a quienes conectamos con su música. Lo mejor de esta presentación es cuando pierde el control del micrófono hacia el final, ¿no les parece? Disfruten.

This is Posty to the fullest extent. The track is a sort of guide to understanding his life, and what activates him or makes him happy. One of the reasons why I said above that my colleagues tore their clothes when they knew I was listening to Post Malone, is because it is known that he has had problems with alcohol, and his extravagance is criticized, but that does not disqualify him from my perspective if anything it humanizes him. Post asks for something real, but that's how he offers himself too, real, sincere, to those of us who connect with his music. The best part of this performance is when he loses control of the microphone towards the end, don't you think? Enjoy.
