Argentina - Free guided trekking to Laguna Esmeralda: helping some tourists to save a little. / Trekking guiado gratis hasta la Laguna Esmeralda: ayudando a algunos turistas a ahorrar un poco. 😃❤️

There is no doubt that one of the most popular treks during your stay in Ushuaia is the one that takes you to the Esmeralda Lagoon. This is a postcard that you cannot miss during your visit, and there are several ways to get to know it. When you plan your trip from a distance, you will find different travel agencies that charge a fortune for this walk, but the reality is that during the summer it is not that difficult. Saying this, I convinced some hostel guests to go visit the lagoon on our own, in a walk that would only take us half an afternoon: they to see it for the first time, and me to have some ‘mates’ with an excellent view ❣️.

No hay dudas de que uno de los trekkings más solicitados durante la estadía en Ushuaia es aquel que te conduce hasta la Laguna Esmeralda. Esta es una postal que no podes perderte en tu paso por ahí, y hay diversas maneras de conocerla. Cuando uno diagrama su viaje a la distancia, encontrará distintas agencias de viaje que cobran fortunas por hacer esta caminata, pero la realidad es que durante el verano tampoco es tan difícil. Diciendo esto fue que convencí a unos huéspedes del hostel de ir a visitar la laguna por nuestra cuenta, en un paseo que nos tomaría solo media tarde: ellos para conocerla por primera vez, y yo para ir a merendar "mates" con una vista excelente ❣️.

During my stay at the hostel I met a lot of people, some of whom I liked better than others, and with whom I still maintain a friendship, albeit a virtual one, to this day. With those guests with whom I had a good vibe, I immediately did various activities, such as going to the bar or sharing a communal dinner. When I heard that two of them were considering paying for a guided tour to the Emerald Lagoon, I suggested that this was not necessary at that time of the year, and that if they wanted, I could accompany them.

En la estadía en el hostel conocí a mucha gente, y algunos me cayeron mejor que otros, con quienes mantengo una amistad aunque sea virtual hasta el día de hoy. Con aquellos huéspedes con los que tenía buena onda enseguida hice varias actividades, como ir al bar o compartir una cena comunitaria. Cuando escuché que dos de ellos estaban considerando pagar por un tour guiado hasta la Laguna Esmeralda les sugerí que esto no era del todo necesario hacerlo en esa época del año, y que si querían, yo podría acompañarlos.

In the summer, a guided tour to Laguna Esmeralda could cost upwards of $80. However, this trail is well marked and it is almost impossible to get lost, if you have even a minimum of mountain experience, or some common sense. This trail is about 6 km long and can be covered in an hour and a half or less if your walking pace is fast, and it is full of signs and footbridges that guide you to the lagoon almost unmistakably. But not many people know this, and end up opting for the paid tour. Of course, being accompanied by a professional guide is always the best option, but if you like adventure and want to save a little, you can also go on your own.

En el verano, un tour guiado hasta la Laguna Esmeralda podía costar más de $80. Sin embargo, esta senda está perfectamente señalizada y es casi imposible perderse, si tenes aunque sea un mínimo de experiencia en la montaña, o algo de sentido común. Este trayecto son unos 6 km que se recorren en una hora y media o menos si tu ritmo de caminata es rápido, y está lleno de carteles y pasarelas que te guían hasta la laguna casi inconfundiblemente. Pero esto no mucha gente lo sabe, y terminan optando por el tour pago. Por supuesto que ir acompañado de un guia profesional siempre es la mejor opción, pero si te gusta la aventura y queres ahorrar un poco, también podes ir por tu cuenta.

During the last week of February I had met Fabri from Santa Fe, Argentina, and Erez from Israel. They were among those guests with whom I enjoyed socialising, because they stayed for more than a week. With them we shared dinners and evening walks, and I didn't hesitate to accompany them to the lagoon either. Although I had done this trek twice before, the sights that can be seen on this trail could never tire me.

Durante la última semana de febrero había conocido a Fabri de Santa Fe, Argentina, y a Erez de Israel. Ellos fueron de esos huéspedes con los que me gustaba sociabilizar, porque tuvieron estadías de más de una semana. Con ellos compartimos cenas y paseos nocturnos, y yo tampoco dudé en acompañarlos hasta la laguna. A pesar de que yo ya había hecho este trekking dos veces antes, las vistas que se pueden observar en este camino nunca podrían cansarme.

Fabri and Erez successfully completed the journey to the Emerald Lagoon and we arrived with plenty of sunset light ahead of us. The condition for this ride was to start after 4 PM, when I was finishing my shift at the hostel. One of the nicest things about Ushuaia was that in summer it was light until very late, so starting long treks at unconventional hours was not so bad (taking the necessary precautions, of course). That's why even though we arrived at the lagoon at almost 6 PM, we were still able to enjoy its beautiful colour.

Fabri y Erez completaron satisfactoriamente el trayecto hasta la Laguna Esmeralda y llegamos con bastante luz del atardecer por delante. La condición de este paseo fue empezarlo después de las 4 PM, cuando yo terminaba mi turno en el hostel. Una de las cosas más lindas de Ushuaia era que en verano había luz hasta muy tarde, por lo que empezar trekkings un poco largos a horas no convencionales no estaba tan mal (teniendo los recaudos necesarios, por supuesto). Es por esto que aún habiendo llegado a la laguna casi a las 6 PM, todavía pudimos disfrutar de su color hermoso.

Due to the shape of the terrain almost arriving to the lagoon, the last kilometre is bordering a river and almost at the arrival, you have to make a small climb until you find yourself in the middle of the lagoon. I always love this moment, because the colour of the lagoon changes a little with the sun, depending on the lighting, you always see a ‘different’ lagoon. Anyway, it never ceases to be beautiful and our group of three fulfilled its goal: they got to know the lagoon at last, and I enjoyed my ‘mates’ in front of a great landscape ❤️.

Por la forma que tiene el terreno casi llegando a la laguna, el último kilómetro es bordeando un río y casi al llegar, tenes que hacer una pequeña subida hasta encontrarte de lleno con toda la laguna. Este momento siempre es algo que me encanta, porque como el color de la laguna cambia un poco con el sol, dependiendo de la iluminación que haya siempre vez una laguna "diferente". Sea como sea, nunca deja de ser hermosa y nuestro grupo de tres cumplió su objetivo: ellos conociendo la laguna al fin, y yo disfrutando de mis "mates" frente a un gran paisaje ❤️.

My whole stay in Ushuia allowed me to do a lot of trekking on my own with different companions each time and they were all successful treks. However, I don't want to neglect to mention that summer in Ushuaia is the best time for ‘low risk’ trekking: At this time of the year, most treks can be done without a guide, but this is something that changes during the winter when the trails are covered with snow and special equipment and people who know the trail are required to be able to move forward without problems. In conclusion, always be responsible and choose the best option according to your conscience and safety.

Toda mi estadía en Ushuia me permitió hacer un montón de trekking por mi cuenta con distintos acompañantes cada vez y todas fueron caminatas exitosas. Sin embargo, no quiero dejar de mencionar de que el verano en Ushuaia es la mejor época para realizar trekking con "bajo riesgo": En este momento del año, la mayoría de las caminatas se puede realizar sin guía, pero esto es algo que cambia durante el invierno cuando los caminos se tapan de nieve y se requiere equipamiento especial y gente que conozca el sendero para poder avanzar sin problemas. En conclusión, siempre hay que ser responsable y elegir la mejor opción de acuerdo a nuestra consciencia y seguridad.

I loved trekking with these guys because we went all the way making jokes and telling great travel anecdotes. I also liked my position as an improvised guide, and I was glad that I knew the trail well enough to be able to show it to them (with the help of the thousands of signs everywhere, of course). Laguna Esmeralda is a place you should never miss, even if you are almost a local in Ushuaia. I swear that the feeling of seeing its beautiful colour impacts you no matter how many times you look at it ❤️.

Me encantó hacer trekking con estos chicos porque fuimos todo el camino haciendo chistes y contando anécdotas geniales de viaje. También me gustó mi posición de guía improvisada, y me alegré de conocer bien el camino como para poder mostrarselos a ellos (con ayuda de las miles de señales en todos lados, por supuesto). La Laguna Esmeralda es un lugar que nunca hay que dejar de visitar por más que ya seas casi local en Ushuaia. Juro que la sensación de ver su color hermoso te impacta sin importar cuantas veces la mires ❤️.
