GarageBand iOS Lesson 2 - Creating Your First Project (CREATE YOUR ARTIST)
Welcome to the second video in our GarageBand for iOS course! In this tutorial, we’ll dive into creating your first song and cover essential tips for managing your tracks, including where they’re saved on your iPhone and how to sync them with other devices using cloud services like Google Drive or Dropbox.
Getting Started: Creating a New Song
When you first open GarageBand, it automatically loads the last song you were working on. To start a new project or exit the current one, tap the downward-facing arrow in the top left corner. Then, select "My Songs." This will take you to a file browser that shows where your songs are stored on your device.
Navigating the File Browser
In the file browser, you'll notice the label "On My iPhone" in the top left corner. Tap on it to explore the various folders available in the Files app. If you have cloud services like iCloud Drive, Google Drive, or Dropbox installed, you’ll see them listed here too. Using these cloud options is a great way to work seamlessly across multiple devices. For example, you can start a song on your iPhone while on the go and then continue working on it at home on your iPad. Changes will sync automatically between your devices.
Creating a New Track
To create a new song, simply tap "Create Song" within the file browser. GarageBand will ask if you want to start with a Live Loop or a traditional track setup. Choose the option that best suits your project. For this tutorial, let’s keep it simple by recording a few notes on a keyboard.
After recording, tap the downward-facing arrow again and select "My Songs" to save your work. The song will be named "My Song" by default, but I recommend renaming it to something more specific, like "Hip Hop Beat 2," to keep your projects organized.
Organizing and Managing Your Files
Now that your song is saved, you can organize it further. Tap and hold the song to reveal additional options like copying, moving, or duplicating the file. You can also rename the song or add a tag to it, such as a red tag for "work in progress" or a green tag for "completed track." This makes it easier to find and manage your projects later.
Exporting Your Song
When you’re ready to export your song, tap "Select" in the file browser and choose the song you want to export. You’ll see a new menu at the bottom with options to share (export), move, duplicate, or delete the track. Selecting the "Export" option allows you to save your song as an MP3, WAV, or other audio format. You can even save it as a ringtone or export it as a project file to work on in GarageBand for Mac.
Important Tips on File Management
Finally, keep in mind that GarageBand for iOS doesn’t have a manual save feature—it saves your progress automatically. When you close the app, it will reopen to the last point you were working on.
That’s it for this video! You now know how to create, manage, and export your first song in GarageBand for iOS. Stay tuned for the next tutorial, where we'll dive deeper into making music on this powerful platform. See you then!
