MANA: OUR HISTORY

Hello and good afternoon Q Inspired-by-Music community, in my youth and I say this in this way because I am about to turn thirty years old I listened to a Latin pop rock band that inspired many groups of young people today in terms of this musical genre and today I would like to dedicate a few words to them.

Maná is a Mexican Latin rock and pop band founded in 1986 in Guadalajara, Jalisco. It is currently formed by Fernando Olvera (rhythm guitar, harmonica and lead vocals), Juan Calleros (bass and double bass), Álex González (drums and vocals) and Sergio Vallín (guitar and vocals). It has sold more than 50 million albums worldwide.

In 1981 they released their first album, Sombrero verde, with the Ariola label; the singles were "Vampiro", "Profesor", "Long time" and "Despiértate".

In 1983 they released A tiempo de rock; the album's singles were "Laura", "Hechos nada más" and "Me voy al mar". With this production the group achieved little success. In 1984, Abraham Calleros, drummer of the group, decided to leave the band to continue his musical career in the United States. The group decided to place an ad in the newspaper asking for a new member, thanks to this they found a young drummer of Cuban-Colombian origin born in Miami, Alex Gonzalez. The life of Sombrero Verde continued until 1986, when guitarist Gustavo Orozco also decided to leave the group to concentrate on his academic studies. When the group was left again as a quartet, Fher decided to close the book on Sombrero Verde and form a new band that would fuse rock, pop and Latin rhythms.

In the midst of this nascent group, the band adopted the name that would give it international projection: "Maná". The group's name was chosen because of the meaning of the word in Polynesian: "positive energy".

When I listened to Mana I felt the hair on the back of my neck stand on end. It was like being in front of the gods of nascent rock in Mexico and Latin America in general. But life and fame made them very acclaimed by the generation of '94 that still today listen to them and enjoy them with euphoria. One of my dreams, besides meeting Johnny Depp, was always to be able to go to a Mana concert. To be able to see the ingenious Alex Gonzalez behind the drums playing a solo or performing a song like ''Clavado en un bar'' or ''Oye mi amor''.

Mana gave life to many soap operas of renowned television production companies such as Televisa and Globo of Brazil, in this last one he supported the project Amor Clandestino. And he collaborated in themes of his authorship with Juan Luis Guerra with ''Blessed is your Light'' and Shakira with ''You are my truth.
