I had a professor who I don't really like because he says that documentary photography, as it's commonly known, isn't truly documentary.

I can respect his opinion, but what I don't like is that he's rigid and asserts this as an absolute truth.

He says that true documentary photography is used for museums or any institution that safeguards and records important information for humanity.

Well, that's not exactly how he said it, but that's the gist of it.

He also says that what is known as documentary photography is actually archival photography.

More or less, I prefer to call it documentary photography because it doesn't only refer to the document or classifying information, but because the word "document" also has a connotation tied to recording or portraying reality.

When I took these photos at a rock band's performance, I was asked what kind of photography I do.

And I said: I aspire to do documentary photography.

He looked at me like he didn't understand, so I said: event photography.

And then he got it and asked for my number to coordinate a shoot at his venue.

That's why I say, more or less, sometimes the goals are the same. However, whoever is responsible for the archival or the "document" must know how to differentiate and even add their own touch, despite the fact that it was simply a rock event at first glance.

Tuve un profesor que no me agrada del todo porque dice que la fotografía documental, como es conocida, no es documental como tal.

Puedo respetar su opinión, pero lo que no me gusta es que es cuadrado y afirma esto como una verdad absoluta.

Él dice que la fotografía documental como tal es la que se usa para museos o cualquier institución que salvaguarde y registre información importante para la humanidad.

Bueno, no es así como lo dijo, pero en líneas generales esa es la idea.

También dice que lo que se conoce como fotografía documental, en realidad es la fotografía de registro.

Palabras más, palabras menos, prefiero llamarlo fotografía documental porque no solo se refiere al documento o a clasificar una información, sino porque la palabra "documentar" también tiene una connotación ligada al registro o al retrato de la realidad.

Cuando tomé estas fotos en la presentación de una banda de rock, me preguntaron qué tipo de fotografía hacía.

Y yo les dije: aspiro a hacer fotografía documental.

Él me vio con cara de que no entendía, así que le dije: fotografía de eventos.

Y ahí entendió y me pidió el número para coordinar una pauta en su local.

Por eso digo, palabras más, palabras menos, a veces los fines son los mismos. Sin embargo, quien se encargue del registro o del "documento", debe saber diferenciar e incluso añadir su sello a pesar de que a simple vista era un evento de rock.
