In factories here it may be called a tea break, probably a remnant from the English influence I guess, and the fact the tea lady would bring a big steaming vat of tea around for the workers.

I'm not sure where smoko originated, but it's essentially a break from work. One might have a cigarette or food, or just a rest either way it's generally a scheduled break when production stops. It happens on work sites also, anywhere really, although tends to be limited to the blue collar jobs.

I say it now and then, even in my white collar world. Something like, time for smoko folks, announced to basically say, let's have a break. I don't smoke - filthy bloody habit.

Aussies have a way of using slang, we sometimes put an 'o' on the end of things for some reason.

Service station becomes servo, (alcohol) bottle shop becomes bottlo, workers compensation becomes compo, a smoke break a smoko. Vehicle registration is rego and so on.

You might become Rando, but it gets more complicated with names - we're pretty good (and brutal) with nicknames. We tend to call people the opposite of what they are sometimes. Someone with red hair might be called bluey or a short person, big boy, a fat person slim. It degenerates from there. I know you Americans have your ways also, and probably do the name thing too.

Slang is a really difficult thing to comprehend here, complex and often State/city specific and with Australia being so multicultural it can get confusing.

Back in the day I did a couple posts about Australian slang, both went quite well, were pretty funny actually as I'd introduce the words then put them all in one long (fucken rediculous) sentence. Maybe I should do one again.
