Yes, don't talk: Rock music from home office

It's been more than 30 years since rock music was still important and had great relevance. Artists were not pop bunnies who sang with computer voices, but stars with guitars, poets, explainers of the world.

We are looking back in a series. Today we have to hear to "Talk", made by Yes.

Rock from another era. Unimpressed by all the new fashions, Jon Anderson and Co. polish the old boots once again. "Talk", studio album number thirteen in the art rock dinosaur's 25-year history, weaves together high-gloss pop and classicist instrumental playfulness to create seven sophisticated little works of art that defiantly refuse any flirtation with the spirit of the times.

At times the whole thing tends more towards the bombast pop of the last three albums, but at other times the highly complicated art rock of the seventies is once again honored, as in the three-part finale "Endless Dream".

Talk" gives the impression of a collection of routine stylistic exercises, and singer Jon Anderson's age-resistant organ doesn't save the band, which was only re-formed in 1991, from the average sounding of every note. Everyone was arguing in the background, guitarist Steve Howe had dropped out and the five musicians involved hardly recorded any parts of the songs together.

The band was one of the first in music history to record the album entirely on digital storage media. They don't "talk" so much to make it. Producer Rabin used the computer program Digital Performer, which made it possible to record rock music in the home office.

Old rock music is still important for some of us. The lyrics used to have deep meanings, but now? Just five different words in a song and people go crazy, with those videos getting millions of views. 🤦‍♀️

That's so true. It's a shame how they are ruined something so special...
