Many if you don't know Killz
Yesterday evening, I came across an old song I used to play back in the day, and I decided to catch some fun with it and see if anyone in my contact list still remembers the song.
The new WhatsApp update now has a feature where a song can be added to a photo or video status. So, I made a post, added the song Shoobedo by Ikechukwu, and staked a prize of N1,000 for anyone who could identify the song.
Shortly after, I got two responses from the list of people who viewed the post. Interestingly, both of them are members of the Hive, and I was told to give them the prize because they knew the song.
I said, “Okay, no problem. To prove that you know the song, you must be able to name the artist and some of his other tracks—and possibly sing them.” This was the task I gave them to confirm they genuinely knew the song.
One of them, @whatmidesays smartly insisted on claiming the prize, arguing that I never mentioned anything about having to prove knowledge of the song. The other person @jmis101 came out honestly to try her luck. She actually had an idea, especially when she nervously sang one of the artist’s songs titled My Name Is Ikechukwu. She came close to giving me the clue I was looking for, but she eventually fell out because she couldn’t continue without using Google search.
It was fun yesterday, and in this article, I want to share some of Ikechukwu’s tracks that were real hits during his prime days.
Now Is the Time – Ikechukwu featuring Don Jazzy
The truth is, anyone who knew good music in those days—especially Nigerian songs—must know this hit track by Ikechukwu. It’s done in a highlife tone, and Don Jazzy is the producer. The beat has an iconic sound, and anytime it comes on, one immediately recognizes the song.
Critical – Ikechukwu featuring D’banj
This is my personal favorite of all his tracks. There’s a special feeling this song gives me whenever it plays. It reminds me of the golden days of Mo’Hits Records, one of the best music crews in those times. Don Jazzy is also the producer of this track, and he knows how to deliver unique and quality beats. Kudos to the signature sound he gave this one.
Whine Am Well – Ikechukwu featuring Don Jazzy
This song, as unpopular as it might seem, is one of his biggest. Anytime Ikechukwu performs at shows, this is the song he usually starts with. Interestingly, when Don Jazzy held the burial ceremony for his mother, this was the very song Ikechukwu performed.
Extra Track
Shoobedo can’t be left out when listing Ikechukwu’s hit tracks. Not many people know this song, but it’s so good that those who did back then still get a wave of nostalgia whenever it plays.
Thanks for reading.
