Congratulations Tems!

Greetings!

For people who don’t just enjoy music for its melody, lyrics, and beat but also deeply appreciate the brains (artists) behind the art, you’ll agree with me that there is a joy—an immeasurable joy—that fills the hearts of fans when their favorite artists win a globally recognized award. Yes, I am very much part of this group of music lovers.

Yesterday was the 67th Grammy Awards, but my schedule was so packed that I couldn’t create time to stream the event live. I was busy all through, and by the time I checked the list of winners around 3 a.m., I was super excited to see Tems winning the Best African Music Performance category with one of her hit tracks, 'Love Me Jeje'.

Talking About the Track 'Love Me Jeje'

Although I have read comments and opinions from people saying that the song doesn’t deserve the applause or the award, I don’t agree at all. People will always have different opinions when a winner is announced. I remember that the last time a South African artist won the same award, the internet was on fire—especially from my dear nation, Nigeria—saying she didn’t deserve it. Lol.

This song is a masterpiece—a fusion of R&B and Afrobeats. The African-style beat makes it so danceable with smooth steps, and the melody in the lyrics adds even more big vibes to it.

The music video is another amazing element that gave the song a massive boost. The simplicity and the radiant smiles in the video are just 100%. Honestly, it was the contagious smiles in the video that really got me glued to it. Tems is incredibly talented, and I love her!

Tems as One of My Favorite Artists

A few years ago, when the world really got to know her through her collaboration with Wizkid on the song Essence, people often said they hadn’t heard of her before that song. That always made me wonder.

Before she reached the peak of her fame, she had already dropped a deeply heartfelt album that featured tracks like 'Looku Looku' (which is my favorite from that album) and 'Try Me', among many others. So even before the fame that people now recognize her for, I had already been a fan.

I have several of her mixtapes on my phone, which I play often. Funny enough, one of them has been on my playlist for years—since she released her first album—and I have never gotten tired of listening to it.

About the Award

Sorry to say, but I don’t really like the way some artists have become too expected to win awards. I mean the way people assume they will always win, and if they don’t, they talk down on the so-called "less popular" or "average" artist who won.

Tems winning this award in the midst of highly acclaimed and more globally famous artists is a big shock, and I love it when surprises like this happen. A lot of people expected the Big 4—which we’ve come to recognize in Nigeria as Davido, Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Rema—to win. But they didn’t, and that shock is what makes the Grammy Awards exciting.

Thanks for reading!
