The Gig Was Great

avatar

On Friday me, my mate, and his brother went up to see Judas Priest (a band I've never really listened to) and they were supported by Saxon (another band I don't really listen to) and Uriah Heep (a band I'd never heard of)

They were all great, and it was a really fun night.

Saxon - Princess of The Night

I really liked this song when I heard it, and they did a breakdown kind of thing where they encouraged the ground to sing along, which was some fun.

Luckily I was able to pick up the lyrics so I could join in.

The singer of Saxon is great, and for someone who's 73, he doesn't seem to be slowing down anytime soon.

Saxon - Strangers In The Night

This was another song they played where everyone joined in to help sing. I've always loved hearing a large crowd sing in unison, and also I was able to add to it as well.

I didn't really think the songs themselves would be as sing-y as they were, but they all were.

The crowd was great too, and my mate's brother started a pit which quickly grew. By this stage, we were a fair few beers in, as were most of the crowd. The prices were fairly crazy, 3 pints of Heineken was 24 Euros, but when going out for nights like this I don't really care about how much money is being spent, as it only happens every so often.

Saxon - Wheels of Steel

The two lads I was with were both really into all the bands who played - hence why they bought the tickets - but it was all new for me.

While my friend has introduced me to many of these bands over the years, I never went out of my way to listen to them, but since seeing them I have. Saxon, for me, was the highlight of the night, but Judas Priest was great too.

Near the middle of Saxons set my friend's brother said he was going to the bar and left the crowd, and me and my friend laughed and said, "Right, we'll see him when the finish playing." (We were about 6-8 layers back from the stage near the centre, and the venue was about 10-12 thousand and sold out.)

About 3 songs passed, then I heard someone call my name, only to turn around and see him there with three pints in hand... legend.

It was a fun night, and after about a 30-minute walk back toward the hotel we found a chipper, got some food, and headed to a pub near where we were staying.

That sounds like an amazing gig ! All bands I used to headbang to in the 80's 😁

It was amazing. The singer from Uriah Heep mentioned at the start of the set that between the bands there they have a collective of 154 years of rock 'n' roll, which is mad, and also kickass that they're still... well, kicking ass, haha

They are all bands I have heard of, but I only know the odd song by them. I think Wheels of Steel was the big hit for Saxon. I used to listen to the Friday Rock Show with Tommy Vance on Radio 1 back in the day and you would hear this stuff. The metal scene has changed since then.

I expect there was a lot of denim and leather in the crowd and probably lots of patches on jackets. Was it mostly older guys? These bands are getting old and may not have many gigs left in them.

Rock on!

Oh, tons of denim and leather, and a hell of a lot of patches, a lot of throwbacks from the 80s haha, it was great to see it, there seemed to be people from every village and town in the country.

No, there was a decent mix of older and younger people there. Plenty of long gray hair, but they were all rocking out and enjoying themselves. Yeah, the lead singer of Uriah Heep mentioned at the start of the set that between them they've got 154 of rocking out. Fairplay to them, they still got it.

My friend @hockney went to the Wembley show. He's not active on Hive these days, but I saw him say elsewhere that he enjoyed the nostalgia. He goes to a lot of gigs.
