Punk Rock, What An Occupation! (Three Tune Tuesday)

avatar

It's #threetunetuesday which is an event that's run by @ablaze every Tuesday, where everyone chooses three tunes to share and talk about. It's a great chance to share a bit of a buzz with the rest of the Hive community, and throw out some songs we enjoy.

Suggestion - Fugazi - from the album, 13 Songs.

This whole album is great, it's one of those ones you can just throw on and enjoy from start to finish. Suggestion in particular is a favourite of mine, and I think their most well known song from this album would probably be Waiting Room.

One thing I enjoy about a good album is a kind of musical treat, where one song blends into the next, and this blends perfectly into Glue Man.

It feels so much like a jam in some ways, and I love that loose feeling when it comes to music. Also, I actually used the jump from Suggestion into Glue Man, 'The Musical Treat' - that only comes from listening to albums rather than a shuffled mix of songs - as an example, while recording our second album and made the suggestion to work on one of our own, while recording and writing it.

Six Foot Rooms - Culture Shock - from the album, Go Wild.

If George Orwell joined a punk band, he would most likely be like Dick Fish, the singer of this band, Subhumans, and Citizen Fish.

I saw Culture Shock back when I was, 21 or 22, they played in Fibber Magees up in Dublin and I think it was a tenner to get in. They were brilliant, and just before Christmas my band played alongside Subhumans, something that I never thought would happen.

Dick Fish is a really down-to-earth guy, I got talking with him back when I saw Culture Shock, and once more after the gig back in December. He even wrote a little poem for my son on his scan photo. It would have been naff to ask for an autograph, so asking him to write a few words, just in case he grows up and is into his punk rock, seemed like a much better request. He took a moment, looked at the picture, grabbed a marker, and about a minute later he handed me this back.

Punk Rock. What an occupation! Just got to meet the third generation. Have a great birthday and I'll see you later. Armed with a random piece of paper!

He couldn't have said anything better and is a true wordsmith.

A Fist For When You're Down - High-Viz - from the EP, which I can't find the title of, unless I is the title.

I actually have this and another of theirs, and I discovered them through meeting the guitar player.

My band was over in London playing in the Underworld in Camden, and after our trip, we were waiting outside the airport, and a lad started a conversation with us, asking if we were in a band.

He said that his band had just come back from Ibiza, and we got talking about music, after a while, we gave him some badges of ours, which was all we had on us, and then he reached into his bag and took out two 7" records.

Needless to say, it wasn't exactly a fair trade, and we offered him some cash for them which he declined. That night I got back home, threw on a pair of headphones to listen to them, and was delighted to hear that they were really good.

I don't know how well-known they are, I follow them on Instagram and they seem to be playing a lot, and getting decent crowds at the gigs. If they aren't "Big" I think they will be within the next few years.

Culture Shock are a great band, and they sound amazing live. His other band Subhumans is amazing though, such a great lyricist.

Nice one man, I am not familiar with that album, so I'll defo be checking that one out.

Ah man, that's so cool, what an unreal thing to be able to give him for his 18th maybe or something like that. So damn cool and great idea by you. Culture Shock sound decent man, another I will have to check out.

These guys are quality too man, jesus, that's a great trio of tunes and love the scan photo with poem too, quality all round.

Thanks so much man, I'm glad you got a buzz out of these ones. I do think though that High-viz will be one to look out for, I can imagine them getting picked up, they're sound guys and haven't been going that long.

Haha that's class! Sorry about the late reply man, things have been a bit hectic and I completely forgot to get back.

Fugazi are an amazing band, and Waiting Room is great, I'd love to learn the bass riff for that one. I love how much of a jam some of the songs on that album sound like.

Hahaha the punk rock baby. Funnily enough my parents met Dick Fish at a Citizen Fish big when I was a baby and he wrote me a little something that I still have. He got a buzz hearing about that story.

Thank you so much man, I'm glad you enjoyed the picks.
