How I Started Teaching My Neighbor’s Son Instruments

How I Started Teaching My Neighbor’s Son Instruments

Music has always been a part of me. From a young age, I found joy and peace in playing instruments, especially the keyboard and guitar. But I never imagined that one day, I would pass on this gift to someone else, let alone my neighbor’s son. This journey began quite unexpectedly, and it has since grown into something beautiful.

It was one regular evening in front of my lodge in school. I had just returned from church and decided to practice a few worship songs on my keyboard. The sun was setting, and the breeze was calm — perfect weather for music. As I played, I noticed a young boy standing nearby, watching me quietly but attentively. He was holding a red acoustic guitar, looking unsure but eager.

The boy was Andah, my neighbor’s son. We had exchanged greetings a few times, but never really interacted. That evening, something changed. I paused my playing and called him over. He approached with a shy smile. I asked if he knew how to play the guitar, and he said, “A little.” I could see the passion in his eyes, even though his confidence was low. Right there, I decided to teach him what I knew.

We started with the basics — how to hold the guitar properly, how to tune it, and how to form simple chords like G, C, and D. At first, his fingers struggled, and he felt discouraged. But I kept reminding him that every great guitarist started from scratch. Slowly, he began to improve. I also introduced him to rhythm and timing using my keyboard so he could understand how different instruments work together to create harmony.

Our lessons weren’t formal — no classrooms, no pressure. We practiced right there in front of my lodge or under the shade nearby. Sometimes we used songs from church, other times we played popular tunes he liked. I noticed that music was not just teaching him notes; it was building his confidence. His posture changed, his smile became brighter, and he started coming with questions and requests to learn more.

Not long after, Andah’s younger brother also showed interest, especially in drums. He would sit nearby, tapping rhythms on any surface he could find. I could tell he was eager to join the learning process, and I plan to begin guiding him too. Music has a way of drawing people in, especially young hearts.

One of the most touching moments was when Andah played a full worship song on the guitar by himself during a small youth gathering. His parents were present, and I saw pride in their eyes. For me, it wasn’t just about teaching music — it was about mentoring a young soul and watching him grow.

Now, we’re even talking about forming a small neighborhood music group with other interested youths. What began as a simple gesture has now turned into a movement of learning, sharing, and uplifting through music. Together with me here is Sir, Joshua Omale MD.
