Music Monday | Daft Punk's finest
Somewhere earlier last week I was driving towards somewhere and the radio station was working into some festival music since it is festival season. One of the thing that also popped by were some classics from Daft Punk. And even though Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christoare not playing anymore, so absolutely zero chance of catching them I was intruiged to get on some of these classics.

Because actually they have a lot of hits. More than you maybe are aware of. So let's take a look at these Frenchies behind the mysterious helmets, and see where what they all did for us before quiting somewhere in 2021 (or earlier..no one really knows)
Da Funk
Ahhhh come on. What a classic this video actually is! I'm sure if you have ever seen it before you will remember the dude with the dog face running around in New York city just trying to get by while is blasting this gigantic radio all the time. No one appreciates doggo man really, except for his old neighborhood girl who acts like it isn't weird at all that the dude has a dog face.
For some reason the video always really reminds me of the video from Roger Sanchez 'Another Chance' where this girl is walking around with this gigantic heart and no one wants to hang with her because her heart is too big. I guess it is also a bit from the same era and the theme is also the same.
But man..Da Funk! It feels like a timeless classic which would still be good if it was released this year.
Doin' it right
I think I have written more often about my love for this song. Where the melody is made by the vocals made in different tones is really something different if you ask me. This was never really released as a single to the big crowds, and coming from the 'Random Access Memories' album this is just one of the many really good songs on it actually.
There is a sort of mineur in the song, the vibe feels like autumn as the sun goes down and this song needs a specific moment to listen to as it surely is not suitable for every moment. For the connaisseurs!
In this era there was also a moment where there was a rumour that Daft Punk was playing in a club I was heading to...And I was siked as hell as you could imagine! Until it turned out to be jsut two random dudes with helmets on making a tribute set list to Daft Punk versus the real deal. Bummer!
Harder, better, faster, stronger
I think in the end this song turned out more like a mantra for a lot of people on how to achieve their goal than that the song was actually a big hit. The song is nice, but the message is even better.
Gym girls play this. People heading towards the olympics play this. The message is good and that you can achieve everything. Who needs a good tune when the message is the answer right?
One more time
This is what I remember Daft Punk the most of I think. All the critics will always say that everything on the 'Random Access Memories' album is the best that they ever made. And sure...that was all very new and original and exclusive.
But the bangers are the older songs. The bangers are the timeless classics that still circulate in the clubs 20 years later. The bangers are the ones where people danced their night away on the songs forgetting everything, not the complicated songs like Girgio by Moroder which ofcourse has a great build up in there...But you can't play it in a club...Because too complicated. The bangers are the ones like 'One more Time'.
It's a pity Daft Punk has decided to quit a while back because they are geniuses and they make awesome stuff that is fresh even though the sound is more than often a bit older, classic let's call it. A come back with a new album a a couple of years would surely be welcomed by everyone. Certainly by me atleast, that is for sure!!
I love Daft Punk, and saw them play chibuku (a local club night) at a venue called Le Bateau when i was in my early 20s.
A lot of that night is hazy, but i remember dancing a lot. And I'm not a natural dancer... I usually need a good few beers🍻 in me to hit the dance floor 😂
Hahaha so you danced to daft punk? YEahhhhhh I get ya!!
I love Daft Punk
Same here!
For me, Daft Punk's best album will always be Discovery, but there'll also be a place in my heart for the rest of their catalog.
One that I have heavily in rotation for the past year is Alive 2007, with the hard-hitting remixes and the epic concert. Great song choices.
The concert! I feel you on this one, this is also one that I play in the car a lot actually, a super sweet set!
Sadly, they didn't perform anymore after that. At least we'll have that epic set.
