What Good Music Means to Me.
Good music means different things to different people. Some people like a song just because it’s popular or because their favourite artist made it. Others might love a song because of how it makes them feel or the memories it brings back. But for me personally, good music goes beyond all of that.
To me, a song becomes good when I can actually feel something while listening to it. I am the kind of person who pays close attention to lyrics. So when a song has deep, relatable, or meaningful lyrics, it automatically pulls me in. I like it when the words being used in the song make sense when they tell a story or reflect something real that I can connect with. I don’t just listen for the sake of listening — I want to feel the emotion, the message, or even the struggle behind the lyrics. I have listened to a lot of songs that made me feel every bit of the words being used in them.
But then it’s not just about the words alone. Rhythm also matters a lot to me. I love it when a song has a nice beat that can make me easily vibe to it or even move my body . I believe a good rhythm adds life to a song. So when a track combines both powerful lyrics and a catchy rhythm, that’s when it becomes good music to me. I believe that balance is important — you can’t just have a good beat with nonsense lyrics or deep lyrics with a boring rhythm. I love songs that get both right.
There are so many songs out there that are trending, especially here in Nigeria, but I don’t always jump on every trend because some of them don't make sense to me. For example, there is this popular song called “Laho” that has been making waves for a while now. As much as I love Afrobeats and I appreciate how far Nigerian music has come, I just can’t vibe to that song. Honestly, the lyrics don’t make sense to me, and because of that, I have never made the personal choice to listen to it on my own. The only times I hear it are when my friends are playing it in the room or when I come across a video where the sound is used on social media. Apart from that, it’s not a song I would go out of my way to play.
In the end, I know everyone has their taste in music, and that’s okay. But for me, a song has to speak to me — either emotionally, mentally, or even physically - by making me dance or vibe to it. That’s what I call good music.
Thanks for reading.
