Music as a great source of income.
Music has become one of the most powerful ways for people to earn a living, especially in my country, Nigeria.
Over the years, the music industry has provided a platform for many people to escape poverty and build massive wealth. I have actually heard several stories of Nigerian artists who started from nothing and became famous internationally through their music, and that proves just how transformative and profitable the music industry can be.
Nowadays, there are alot of music platforms like Apple Music, Spotify, and Youtube music that have revolutionized how musicians make money. They now have access to alot of audience globally who stream their music on a daily basis.
Recently, i came across a video on Tik-Tok where Buju, a popular Nigerian artist, mentioned that one million streams on Apple music earns an artist $7500 and $5500 on Spotify , which is around 8.8 million naira.
That figure is actually mind-blowing when i think of artists like Rema, who gained over a billion streams on just one song. For a split second, it just felt as if one big celebrity should just sign me into a record label without wasting much time.
The earnings through streams alone is incredible , and it's one of the reasons so many people are drawn to the music industry today.
But it's not just streaming that brings in money for them. These artists also earn a lot of money from live performances, hosting shows and concerts.
Whether it's hosting a concert/show in ontario, chicago or in 02 arena in London or even going on tour in Canada. These performances are usually a huge source of income for this artists.
In addition to this concerts, endorsement deals with major brands is another means through which musicians earn money . I once heard Wizkid signed an endorsement deal with U.B.A (United Bank of Africa) for 1 billion naira which is a whole lot of money.
Youtube is another platform that haas become a valuable source of income for many musicians. By gaining millions and billions of views on their music videos, they are able to monetize their content and generate a substantial revenue. Some Nigerian artists even make several millions of naira just from YouTube ads running on their popular music videos.
Even though the rewards of making music can be huge, getting into the industry itself isn’t actually an easy thing.
I have come across many musicians that have explained how they spend years producing music, and building their brands before they finally gain recognition. The early stages are usually tough, as it can take time for them to get noticed by the public or record labels. But once they become well known by the public , the financial opportunities usually come in multiple ways.
It’s funny, because I’ve once thought of making music myself for the purpose of making money - if only I had the voice for it. As for those with the talent and determination to keep pushing, i can assure you music is one of the most effective ways to not only make money but to also achieve lasting success and recognition. From streams to concerts to brand deals, the possibilities are usually endless once you’ve actually made it.
