Semana #154 Comedia Musical. Esta semana les traigo una muy jocosa canción recopilada por el cantautor Gualberto Ibarreto, quien además, la cantó y popularizó.

Week #154 Musical Comedy. This week I bring you a very funny song compiled by the singer-songwriter Gualberto Ibarreto, who also sang and popularized it.

María Antonia es una de varias canciones recopiladas por Gualberto Ibarreto, entre las que destacan: El gallo enano, Cuerpo cobarde y María Antonia; esta última es un merengue venezolano, y se refiere a una mujer, del mismo nombre que, al parecer está loca. Explica la canción que esta mujer duerme en lugares poco usuales: el escaparate o la batea, además de bañarse sobre una mesa, “se lava el pelo con agua oxigenada”, queriendo decir que se pinto el cabello de amarillo.

María Antonia is one of several songs compiled by Gualberto Ibarreto, among which stand out: El gallo enano, Cuerpo cobarde and María Antonia; the latter is a Venezuelan merengue, and refers to a woman, of the same name who, apparently is crazy. The song explains that this woman sleeps in unusual places: in the window or in the pan, besides bathing on a table, "she washes her hair with hydrogen peroxide", meaning that she paints her hair yellow.

Pero la verdad, es que no está loca nada. Dice Gualberto en una entrevista que no está loca: …Ella no duerme en ningún escaparate, ella duerme con otro y viene diciendo que no ha pasado nada. Que se lava el pelo, se lava otra cosa, otra cuestión y dice que no ha pasado nada… esta es la picardía del venezolano, la manera de decir las cosas que hacen reír en una canción.

But the truth is that she is not crazy at all. Gualberto says in an interview that she is not crazy: ...She does not sleep in any window, she sleeps with someone else and comes saying that nothing has happened. She washes her hair, she washes something else, something else and says that nothing has happened... this is the Venezuelan's mischievousness, the way of saying things in the song, to make people laugh, saying that this woman was unfaithful, without saying it.

Existe también una historia de una canción llamada María Engracia que, al parecer es anterior a María Antonia. Es probable que esta canción, María Engracia, llegara a Venezuela y que se comenzara a escuchar en las rockolas de los pueblos del interior del país, siendo adoptada y recemantizada por los campesinos; por eso la conocemos como merengue venezolano y con otro nombre, además, con muchos de sus versos transformados por el gentilicio venezolano.

There is also a story of a song called María Engracia, which apparently predates María Antonia. It is probable that this song, María Engracia, arrived in Venezuela and that it began to be heard in the jukeboxes of the towns of the interior of the country, being adopted and re-cemanticized by the peasants; that is why we know it as Venezuelan merengue and with another name, in addition, with many of its verses transformed by the Venezuelan gentilicio.
