Grapthar's Daily Hive Music Feature: Richard Hell & The Voidoids - 'Betrayal Takes Two'
Richard Hell & The Voidoids - Betrayal Takes Two
Richard Hell is the stage moniker
of a legend in the early NYC punk scene, songwriter, singer, and bassist Richard Lester Meyers. For a short time, he played with Television and The Heartbreakers, big names from that era, before he went on to form his own band, The Voidoids, performing as Richard Hell & The Voidoids. In the '80s, Hell focused more on writing, having released a few novels in the years since. While he is reasonably known for these literary endeavors, it is his music from the late '70s with his band that really cemented his place in history. The Voidoids were a major influence on the many punk bands that followed them, and the album this song is from, Blank Generation, is considered to be one of the seminal releases of the period. The songs on the whole album were clearly influenced by older rock and roll, stripped down, without the excesses of the stadium rock of the '70s. This song is sort of based around the classic '50s love song style, though the guitar varies quite a bit, doing some wild things (a bit like the song from a few days ago by All). It's a really awesome tune, and the album is a whole is definitely recommended listening if you've never checked it out before.
