Three Tune Tuesday - Tres canciones del gran Willie Colón (Esp -Eng)
Hoy estaría cumpliendo 76 años el gran músico, trombonista, compositor, director musical y cantante Willie Colón, de no haber sucedido su lamentable muerte hace unos meses, el 22 de febrero de este año. A propósito de tan infausto acontecimiento, escribí y publiqué en esta plataforma el siguiente post.
Ahora, para celebrar su nacimiento, con cuyo hacer nos dio tanto a la salsa, a la música latina y universal, a nuestra alegría, hago esta entrega.
"Sin Poderte Hablar", compuesta por él, es una de sus canciones más conocidas y apreciadas. Apareció por primera vez en el álbum "Solo" en 1979. Como fue línea de Willie, esta canción amorosa habla, con gran ritmo y expresividad, de la imposibilidad de poder realizar el encuentro con la mujer deseada, a la que, ni siquiera, se le puede acercar.

Luego, les ofrezco esta canción tan pegajosa y cadenciosa, que muchos pudimos bailar en su momento. En ella, volviendo a la temática amorosa, se le canta a la necesidad de sentirse amado, a la seguridad del sentimiento de la amada. Se incluyó en el disco “Fantasmas” de 1981.

"Gitana” es una bella canción que Willie Colón incluyera en el álbum "Tiempo Pa' Matar" de 1984. La letra fue compuesta por José Ortega. Es una hermosa canción de amor, donde se expresa ese sentido de la necesidad de la correspondencia con la mujer anhelada. En esta canción aparecen aquellos versos que han trascendido en nuestra música latina: “Las palabras son de aire y van al aire / Mis lágrimas son agua y van al mar”.

Today, the great musician, composer, musical director, and singer Willie Colón would have been turning 76, had his lamentable passing not occurred a few months ago—on February 22nd of this year. In light of that sorrowful event, I wrote and published the following post on this platform.
Now, to celebrate his birth—through whose creative work he gave so much to salsa, to Latin and world music, and to our collective joy—I present this tribute.
"Sin Poderte Hablar," composed by him, is one of his most well-known and cherished songs. It first appeared on the album Solo in 1979. True to Willie's signature style, this love song—delivered with great rhythm and expressiveness—speaks to the impossibility of bringing about an encounter with a desired woman—one whom he cannot even bring himself to approach.
Next, I offer you this catchy and rhythmic song—one that many of us had the pleasure of dancing to back in the day. Returning to the theme of romance, it sings of the need to feel loved and of the desire for assurance regarding the beloved's feelings. It was included on the 1981 album Fantasmas.
"Gitana" is a beautiful song that Willie Colón included on the 1984 album Tiempo Pa' Matar. The lyrics were written by José Ortega. It is a lovely love song that expresses that deep sense of needing reciprocity from the woman one yearns for. This song features those verses that have transcended into the canon of Latin music: "Words are made of air and drift into the air / My tears are water and flow into the sea."
