The Impact of Music on Children's Development

Over the years, I was opportune to be raised among kids; this experience caused me to see the value of music. Moreover, living in a family compound where aunties and uncles leave their kids with us for holidays made me intentional in understanding children's development. Beyond the entertainment role of music, it is seen that music influences in developing the cognitive behavior of a child causing either positive or negative social, physical, and emotional growth in a child.

To explain further, I want to share deeply the effects of music on children's development in contemporary times using the points below:

Cognitive Development

The brain of a child stimulates when he listens to repetitive sounds. This is why a child may not be able to sing the song but can hum it because he heard it repeatedly in his subconscious. Another way music affects a child's cognitive development is that it makes a child discern a happy song from a sorrowful one based on its melody. For instance, music can be played and a child becomes cheerful, dancing here and there; meanwhile, another music can be played and it causes the child to cry - this is a way of building their emotional state.

In schools, music is used to improve a child's intellect. Teaching of alphabets and numbers in the form of music is the fastest way to help the child perform better academically. With continuous repetition of the alphabets and numbers in songs, the memory is enhanced causing kids to be more attentive to the lesson. Sometimes, they can forget the literal teaching but can never forget the teaching that was done in the form of music.

From the above-mentioned, music is clearly a tool used to improve literacy and cognitive flexibility of a child through the patterns and rhythms of the music.

Emotional and Social Development

Music performance in extracurricular activities like Cultural Day, Christmas Day, etc can boost the confidence of a child. How? By learning choreography, dance drama, and other music-related activities, music plays a role in helping kids to express themselves publicly without being frightened. In the aspect of singing and playing musical instruments, music builds a child's social life because they learn to transfer their feelings through singing or playing instruments. It is a powerful tool that can be employed as it enhances the social awareness and emotional well-being of a child.

Physical Development

Music is a tool used for exercising, thereby building the physical health of a child. The activities done when music is played develop the motor skills and physical coordination of a child. Some of these activities include dancing, clapping, jumping, squatting, etc. Though it makes the kids expressive, it also makes their bones stronger.

Language Development

Music can connect one to his cultural background; with cultural songs and hymns, children can learn their language through the ability to sing melodies, rhythms, and patterns. By doing so, a child can discern its cultural songs when it's played in any place outside home.

Is Music Now Good for Kids' Minds?

Certainly, in this recent era, children are exposed to educational apps and games that incorporate music, to engage in the activity, and learn effectively as the music follows suit with the game.
Also, a lullaby is a sound that relieves a child from stress causing them to sleep.

Conclusion

Music is seen to be a powerful tool that builds children's development. It enhances cognitive abilities, supports emotional and social growth, promotes physical development, and helps kids to trace their cultural background. By integrating music into the daily lives of children, we can support their development and enrich their day-to-day lives.
