I remember my father always, but I remember him in a very special way when I take my street photos and even more when I'm editing them and use them to express my way of perceiving my surroundings... My father used to tell me something like, “You are just the guy who if something is wrong, he can make it look much worse” 😂 and this was not something my father said as a criticism towards me as a person. On the contrary, he used to tell me that kind of thing with a joking smile on his face and I used to answer him in a similar way.... But behind all this there was an undeniable difference in character between us, which was always present in our father-son relationship...

A mi padre le recuerdo siempre, pero le recuerdo de manera muy especial cuando hago mis fotos callejeras y más aún cuando las estoy editando y las uso para expresar mi manera de percibir mi entorno... Mi padre solía decirme algo como: "Eres justo el tipo quien si algo está mal, lo puede hacer lucir mucho peor" 😂 y esto no era algo que mi padre dijese como una crítica hacia mi persona. Por el contrario, solía decirme ese tipo de cosas con una sonrisa jocosa en su rostro y yo solía contestarle de manera similar... Pero detrás de todo esto había una innegable diferencia de caracteres entre ambos, cosa la cual siempre estuvo presente en nuestra relación de padre-hijo...

When I was born, my father was 42 years old. So the generation gap between us was notorious... By the time I was in my teens, I was a short, chubby kid with social problems and chronic asthma... And my father, even though he was well past his 50's, was a huge 6'4" mass of testosterone with a lot of stories behind him from a life in which he was (and I'm being serious): Bullfighter, boxer, wrestler, painter, topographer, telecommunications technician, lifeguard, cyclist, motorcyclist, horse jump rider, cabin builder, carver, sculptor, auto mechanic, horticulturalist, weight lifter, pipe and tobacco smoker, cook, loyal whiskey drinker, poem writer, and lovelorn to the point of nearly wrecking his marriage to my mother... I still meet people in the streets of the village who tell me things like: “You are totally different from your father”... Obviously during the time I had my father with me we had thousands of conflicts. But surprisingly, we had a very close relationship, we always shared time together and even when I was married, we used to make long trips together to spend excellent days. And, of course, we always told each other how much we loved each other even though he was (I liked to tell him to annoy him) a: “Crazy old man with the pretensions of a legend” and I was (he told me with the same intention): “The strangest vegetarian guy on the planet” 😂... I have very good memories of Dad indeed...

Cuando yo nací, mi padre contaba con 42 años de edad. Así que la diferencia generacional entre nosotros era notoria... Para el momento de mi adolescencia yo era un chico bajito y regordete con problemas para socializar y asma crónica... Y mi padre, aún habiendo pasado ya sus 50 años, era una masa enorme de testosterona de 1.90 mts con un montón de historias a cuestas producto de una vida en la que fue (y estoy hablando en serio): Torero, boxeador, luchador, pintor, topógrafo, técnico de telecomunicaciones, salvavidas, ciclista, motociclista, jinete de salto con caballos, constructor de cabañas, tallista, escultor, mecánico automotriz, hortelano, levantador de pesas, fumador de pipa y tabaco, cocinero, fiel consumidor de whisky, escritor de poemas y enamoradizo a niveles de haber estado a punto de echar al traste su matrimonio con mi madre... Aún encuentro personas en las calles del pueblo que me dicen cosas como: "Tú eres totalmente distinto a tu padre"... Obviamente que durante el tiempo que tuve a mi padre conmigo tuvimos miles de conflictos. Pero de manera sorprendente, tuvimos una relación muy cercana, siempre compartíamos tiempo juntos e incluso, ya estando yo casado, acostumbrábamos a hacer largos viajes juntos para pasar días excelente. Y, como no, siempre nos decíamos uno al otro cuanto nos amábamos a pesar de que él era (me gustaba decirle para molestarle) un: "Viejo loco con ínfulas de leyenda" y yo era (me decía el con la misma intención): "El tipo vegetariano más extraño del planeta" 😂... Tengo muy buenos de Papá ciertamente...

I remembered and wrote all this about my father precisely because my black and white street photos today reflect the drama of the town in decay.... These are the kind of photos that my father would not have liked I take and he would probably say something like: “You are a kind of prophet of disaster, but they are good photos” 😂

Recordé y escribí todo esto acerca de mi padre precisamente porque mis fotos callejeras en blanco y negro de hoy, reflejan el drama de un pueblo en decadencia... Este es el tipo de fotos las cuales a mi padre no le hubiera gustado que yo hiciera y seguramente diría algo como: "Eres una especie de profeta del desastre, pero son buenas fotos" 😂
