Working with a Living Composer!

You can start by playing the video above and use it as background music to accompany the text I will tell you today. This story began last year, just a month after my dad's death. The concert you can see in the video was a world premiere of the work Credo by the young Venezuelan composer Fernando Escalona. It was conducted by Maestro Christián Vásquez, and in it you can see the Symphony Orchestra and the Simón Bolívar National Choir, but for the reasons I already told you, I was not singing on stage, although I had the pleasure of watching it from the audience with my mom.

El concierto que pueden ver en el video fue un estreno mundial de la obra Credo del joven compositor venezolano Fernando Escalona. Fue dirigido por el Maestro Christian Vásquez, y en el se puede apreciar a la Orquesta Sinfónica y la Coral Nacional Simón Bolívar, pero por los motivos que ya les dije yo no estuve cantando en tarima, aunque tuve el placer de apreciarla desde el público junto a mi mamá.

Yes, for those who read my post yesterday, the Lady of Cakes was also there 😬 but my mom's presence just a month after our family tragedy was due to something very special, my girlfriend @jhoxiris was the Soprano who was selected for this world premiere. In fact I could have learned this music in a week, that's precisely what I just did this week 😅 but at that time I was also coming out of my third covid-19 and my biggest inspiration is seeing Jhoxiris on stage.

Sí, para quienes leyeron mi post de ayer, la Señora de las Tortas también estuvo ahí 😬 pero es que la presencia de mi mamá a solo un mes de nuestra tragedia familiar se debía a algo muy especial, mi novia @jhoxiris fue la Soprano que quedó seleccionada para este estreno mundial. De hecho pude haberme aprendido esta música en una semana, precisamente es lo que acabo de hacer esta semana 😅 pero en ese tiempo también estaba saliendo de mi tercer covid-19 y mi inspiración más grande es ver a Jhoxiris en escena.

Now, who is Fernando Escalona? Well, he is a musical genius from a town here in Venezuela very famous in Caracas called Guatire. He was part of the Simon Bolivar National Choir since its foundation, but he migrated just the year I joined the choir, although I knew him because he was teaching me lyrical singing in another more basic choral group. This guy is a countertenor, he finished his studies at the Palace of Versailles in France and was the first countertenor in history to enter the Paris Opera. He is incredible, he learned to speak French in record time, when he sings he covers the whole choir with the timbre of his voice and his projection, and my biggest surprise was to discover that while I was starting in the choir here in Venezuela, he was writing wonderful music like this one that I hope you are listening to, for orchestra and choir, and in fact this Credo is his third symphony, so there is more and more to come, and if you listen to it well, you will appreciate as I do that it has nothing to envy to great composers of history like Beethoven or Verdi, in fact this Credo seems a summary of everything I have learned as a musician and makes me feel in diapers next to a person like him.

Ahora, ¿Quién es Fernando Escalona?. Pues es un genio musical de un pueblo aquí en Venezuela muy famoso en Caracas al que llamamos Guatire. Fue parte de la Coral Nacional Simón Bolívar desde su fundación, pero justo migró el año que yo entré a la coral, aunque sí lo conocí porque me daba clases de canto lírico en otra agrupación coral más básica. Este chico es contratenor, terminó sus estudios en el Palacio de Versalles en Francia y fue el primer contratenor en la historia en entrar a la Opera de Paris. El es increíble, aprendió a hablar Frances en tiempo récord, cuando canta tapa a todo el coro con el timbre de su voz y su proyección, y mi sorpresa mayor fue descubrir que mientras yo me iniciaba en la coral aquí en Venezuela, el escribía música maravillosa como esta que espero que estén escuchando, para orquesta y coro, y de hecho este Credo es su tercera sinfonía, osea que hay más y viene más, y si la escuchan bien, podrán apreciar como yo que no tiene nada que envidiarle a grandes compositores de la historia como Beethoven o Verdi, de hecho este Credo parece un resumen de todo lo que he aprendido como músico y me hace sentirme en pañales al lado de una persona como él.

In my work we have lived a very crazy month, tiring and satisfying at the same time. The anniversary of the institution is in February and there are always great concerts, also international teachers were brought to participate, but at the same time we take advantage of them to see master classes. The National Choir in particular is trying to work on our repertoire for the next tour to Spain which will be in mid-March, but the craziest thing is that this Credo is coming back into our lives, we only have 5 days of rehearsal and I have already learned it, and my girl will be the Soprano soloist again. We all think it's crazy to have so much work, at the end of the day we don't play instruments, we are singers and we get tired, but there is a special reason.

En mi trabajo hemos vivido un mes muy loco, cansón y satisfactorio al mismo tiempo. El aniversario de la institución es en Febrero y siempre se hacen conciertos apoteósicos, además se trajeron maestros internacionales para participar, pero al mismo tiempo los aprovechamos para ver clases magistrales. La Coral Nacional particularmente se encuentra intentando trabajar nuestro repertorio de la próxima gira a España que será a mediados de Marzo, pero lo más loco es que este Credo vuelve a nuestras vidas, solo tenemos 5 días de ensayo y ya me lo aprendí, y mi chica volverá a ser la Soprano solista. Todos pensamos que es una locura tener tanto trabajo, al final del día no tocamos instrumentos, somos cantantes y nos fatigamos, pero hay un motivo especial.

As I told you a few months ago, last year we won a Latin Grammy for Best Classical Album and of course we would like to repeat that feat as an institution. You never know who the nominees for this award will be, but wow, you should just listen to this music that sounds like an award winner. Whatever happens, to try to achieve at least one nomination we have to have the album ready before a particular date and to achieve that we have to record before our tour because yes, even though we have a lot of work. The rehearsals are very interesting, because I am appreciating the birth of a composition together with the composer who still makes changes depending on certain elements. Also in the room are the sound engineers giving tips on how we should sing to achieve a very professional sound and that summarizes the time in the recording studio, I really feel very inspired at this moment, no matter if I have no free time now, then will come the sweet satisfaction of the reward for a good job ❤️

Como le conté hace unos meses, el año pasado nos ganamos un Latin Grammy por el Mejor Álbum de Música Clásica y por supuesto nos gustaría repetir esa hazaña como institución. Nunca se sabe quienes serán los nominados para esta premiación, pero wow, solo deben escuchar esta música que suena a ganadora de premios. Pase lo que pase, para intentar lograr al menos una nominación hay que tener el disco listo antes de una fecha en particular y para lograr eso tenemos que grabar antes de nuestra gira porque sí, aunque tengamos mucho trabajo. Los ensayos son muy interesantes, porque estoy apreciando el nacimiento de una composición junto al compositor que aún hace cambios dependiendo de ciertos elementos. También se encuentran en la sala los ingenieros de sonido dando tips de como debemos cantar para lograr un sonido muy profesional y que resuma el tiempo en el estudio de grabación, realmente me siento muy inspirado en este momento, no importa si no tengo tiempo libre ahora, luego vendrá la dulce satisfacción de la recompensa por un buen trabajo ❤️
