Inspired by the Historical Trajectory of my Childhood Idols

Happy weekend music lovers! Today I am more inspired than ever and it is because I have shared the stage with one of the most important choral groups in Venezuela. In fact, for many years the Orfeón Universitario de la UCV was considered the best, and I have no doubt that many still think so. These singers are from the Central University of Venezuela and are celebrating 80 years of artistic career, something unthinkable for other choral groups, including the one I belong to.

¡Feliz fin de semana amantes de la música!. Hoy me encuentro más inspirado que nunca y es debido a haber compartido tarima con una de las agrupaciones corales más importantes de Venezuela. De hecho por muchos años el Orfeón Universitario de la UCV fue considerada la mejor, y no dudo que muchos lo sigan pensando de esta manera. Estos cantantes son de la Universidad Central de Venezuela y están cumpliendo 80 años de trayectoria artística, algo impensable para otra agrupaciones corales, incluyendo a la cual pertenezco.

This Orfeón Universitario is cultural heritage in my country; it has recorded many records, music that I grew up listening to at home, and my parents did not play it for me, it was me who discovered these recordings among their albums and played them, especially the Christmas choral music, until today I do not stop listening to these records and I have converted them to a format to be listened to on my mobile devices. They have just arrived from a tour in Europe to celebrate these 80 years, and we wanted to pay them a small tribute in our house, the Simón Bolívar Hall.

Este Orfeón Universitario es patrimonio cultural en mi país; ha grabado muchos discos, música que crecí escuchando en casa, y no me la ponían mis papás, era yo que descubría estas grabaciones entre sus álbumes y las ponía, especialmente la música coral navideña, hasta el son de hoy no dejo de escuchar estos discos y los he convertido a un formato para ser escuchado en mis dispositivos móviles. Ellos acaban de llegar de una gira por Europa para celebrar estos 80 años, y nosotros quisimos hacerles un pequeño homenaje en nuestra casa, la Sala Simón Bolívar.

Because of the magnitude of our work, which almost always goes hand in hand with symphony orchestras and new repertoire almost daily, we almost never share the stage with other choral groups (often also because of the number of singers in my group). The best way is to have them come to my house to share the stage, although other possibilities are not impossible. I enjoy all choral music concerts, but this one was very special, I knew almost all the repertoire, it was like a musical journey through several moments of my life and I was happy to discover that the new generation of the Orfeón is still as talented as the one I grew up listening to in the 90s.

Por la magnitud de nuestro trabajo que casi siempre va de la mano con orquestas sinfónicas y repertorio nuevo casi a diario, casi nunca compartimos escenario con otras agrupaciones corales (muchas veces también por la cantidad de cantantes de mi agrupación). La mejor manera es que vengan a casa a compartir tarima, aunque otras posibilidades no son imposibles. Disfruto todos los conciertos de música coral, pero este fue muy especial, me sabía casi todo el repertorio, fue como un viaje musical por varios momentos de mi vida y me alegró descubrir que la nueva generación del Orfeón sigue siendo tan talentosa como la que crecí escuchando en los 90.

I hope that my chorale will also last for many years and that its seal will remain in the Venezuelan musical history. I think we are on the right track with only 16 years of trajectory, and hopefully life will allow me to be here for a long time to continue to be enraptured with so many gifts that music gives us year after year. Espero que mi coral también perduré muchos años y que su sello quede plasmado en la historia musical venezolana. Creo que vamos por buen camino con solo 16 años de trayectoria, y ojalá la vida me permita estar aquí por mucho tiempo para seguir embelesado con tantos regalos que la música nos otorga año tras año.
