Musical Moments that Inspire!

Evidently our successful tour of Spain is over and the artistic growth and musical ties are stronger than ever with this and other European countries. However, photographs, videos and anecdotes of this pleasant experience continue to appear. Personally, you already know that my love for music is great, but I look back at everything we did in such a short time and I can't believe it, I feel more inspired to follow this path. Yesterday was the first rehearsal of the choir, almost two weeks after our return to Caracas, it was Friday, a strange day to start a new stage, and yet we were all present... That's not normal on a Friday 😅 I realized that we were in Spain for 14 days, we visited 8 cities, but we had 12 musical presentations 😵‍💫 wow, it was really a very strong agenda and I didn't realize it because I was on the verge of happiness.

Evidentemente nuestra exitosa gira por España terminó y el crecimiento artístico y los lazos musicales están más fuertes que nunca con este y otros países europeos. Sin embargo, siguen apareciendo fotografías, videos y anécdotas de esta grata experiencia. En lo personal, ya saben que mi amor por la música es grande, pero veo en retrospectiva todo lo que hicimos en tan corto tiempo y no me lo creo, me siento más inspirado a seguir este camino. Ayer fue el primer ensayo de la coral, casi dos semanas después de nuestro regreso a Caracas, fue Viernes, un día extraño para comenzar una nueva etapa, y aún así todos estuvimos presentes... Eso no es normal un día Viernes 😅 Me he dado cuenta que estuvimos en España 14 días, conocimos 8 ciudades, pero tuvimos 12 presentaciones musicales 😵‍💫 wow, de verdad fue una agenda muy fuerte y no me di cuenta por estar al borde de la felicidad.

Radio Nacional de España

On Monday March 18th we got off the plane (without having slept at all), and went straight to Radio Nacional de España in Madrid, where we recorded for the program Sinfonía de la Mañana that was broadcasted on March 21st, you can listen to the whole program by click here. It was an excellent way to promote and start our stay in Spain and the first stage that I loved, as it is perfect for express recordings, with all the necessary technical equipment and a very acceptable space where all 91 singers came in. Many famous artists have recorded here over the years, so it was an honor for us.

El lunes 18 de Marzo nos bajamos del avión (sin haber dormido nada), y nos fuimos directo a la Radio Nacional de España en Madrid, donde grabamos para el programa Sinfonía de la Mañana que se transmitió el 21 de Marzo, pueden escuchar el programa completo haciendo click aquí. Fue una excelente manera de promocionar y comenzar nuestra estadía en España y el primer escenario que amé, ya que es perfecto para grabaciones express, con todo el quipo técnico necesario y un espacio muy aceptable donde entramos los 91 cantantes. Muchos artistas famosos han grabado aquí a través del tiempo, así que fue todo un honor para nosotros.

Palacio de Congresos de Badajoz

I didn't even know that Badajoz existed, but it was one of the first cities that was confirmed to us at the beginning of the year and I had a lot of time to look for information about this place. Visually it was the stage that most caught my attention, and its architecture is impressive, modern and out of the ordinary regarding theaters. This concert took place on Wednesday, March 20 and was the real start of the tour. In addition to the excitement of being the first official concert, the reunions with friends and Venezuelans who live there and eagerly awaited our visit began. There was not much time to get to know the city, besides the fact that the hotel was very far from downtown, but it was an experience I will never forget for its artistic value.

Yo ni sabía que Badajoz existía, pero fue una de las primeras ciudades que nos confirmaron desde inicios del año y tuve mucho tiempo para buscar información sobre este lugar. Visualmente era el escenario que más me llamaba la atención conocer, y es que su arquitectura es impresionante, moderna y fuera de lo común respecto a teatros. Este concierto se llevó a cabo el Miércoles 20 de Marzo y fue el inicio real de la gira. Además de la emoción de ser el primer concierto oficial, comenzaron los reencuentros con amigos y venezolanos que viven allá y esperaron con ansias nuestra visita. No hubo mucho tiempo de conocer la ciudad, además de que el hotel quedaba muy alejado del centro, pero fue una experiencia que jamás olvidaré por su valor artístico.

On Thursday, March 21, we went to Úbeda, the Renaissance City (that's how I call it). We also stayed for a short time, but I had the opportunity to tour almost the entire city. With even more impressive acoustics than in Badajoz, this concert for several days we considered it the best, although later we have already entered into debate among the choristers themselves 😅 We had audience in front of us and also on both sides, as you can see in the picture above and it was one of the spaces where we did not enter, so we made many changes of position and I think we managed to see each other very well from the seats. Here we surprised the audience by singing in the central patio at the end of the concert to see them off and the arrangement outside made for magic in our sound and an experience of love for both them and us.

El Jueves 21 de Marzo nos presentamos en Úbeda, la Ciudad Renacentista (así la nombre yo). También estuvimos poco tiempo, pero tuve oportunidad de recorrer casi toda la ciudad. Con una acústica aún más impresionante que en Badajoz, este concierto por varios días lo consideramos el mejor, aunque luego ya hemos entrado en debate entre los mismos coralistas 😅 Teníamos público frente a nosotros y también a ambos costados, como pueden ver en la fotografía de arriba y era uno de los espacios donde no entrábamos, así que hicimos muchos cambios de posición y creo que logramos vernos muy bien desde las butacas. Aquí sorprendimos al público al cantar en el patio central al final del concierto para despedirlos y la disposición en el exterior logró magia en nuestro sonido y una experiencia de amor tanto para ellos como para nosotros.

Casa Museo Federico García Lorca

On Friday March 22nd we arrived very early in Granada where we made a brief presentation in Lorca's house. What was so special about this presentation? We sang several of his poems that we musicians have turned into songs, plus our piano accompanist played Lorca's piano from inside the house, with the window open, and we performed the "Nocturnos de la Ventana". This was the second time we did a performance outdoors and I am always pleasantly surprised that we managed to sound in open places without losing our essence.

El Viernes 22 de Marzo llegamos muy temprano a Granada donde hicimos una breve presentación en la Casa de Lorca. ¿Qué tuvo de especial esta presentación?. Que cantamos varias de sus poesías que los músicos hemos convertido en canciones, además de que nuestro pianista acompañante toco el piano de Lorca desde dentro de la casa, con la ventana abierta e interpretamos los "Nocturnos de la Ventana". Esta fue la segunda vez que hicimos un performance en el exterior y siempre me sorprende gratamente que logramos sonar en lugares abiertos sin perder nuestra esencia.

That same day in the afternoon took place one of the most magical moments of the tour, since La Alhambra by nature is a unique, spiritual place, full of peace and history. We surprised the tourists by doing a flashmob and I really felt that our voices reached the sky. Nobody imagined that there would be good acoustics here, but in fact the music came through the open ceiling of the place and harmonized the whole Alhambra, according to those who lived the experience from the outside. We sang far apart from each other and yet I was thrilled by the sound that was achieved and we understood that we can take on any challenge that is proposed to us...

Ese mismo día en la tarde se llevó a cabo uno de los momentos más mágicos de la gira, ya que La Alhambra por naturaleza es un lugar único, espiritual, lleno de paz y mucha historia. Sorprendimos a los turistas asistentes haciendo un flashmob y realmente sentí que nuestras voces llegaron hasta el cielo. Nadie imaginó que hubiera una buena acústica aquí, pero de hecho la música salía por el techo abierto del lugar y armonizó a toda la Alhambra, según los que vivieron la experiencia desde afuera. Cantamos muy separados entre nosotros y aún así me estremeció de dicha el sonido que se logró y entendimos que podemos asumir cualquier reto que se nos proponga...

The next day we continued in the same city and had the third official concert of the group in Granada, with the special feature that we sang with two youth choirs of the city, so we were more people on stage, but the stage was so big that even more people could join us. Of course there was a large audience, not only because of the families of the children who sang with us, but also because this is the city of our accompanying pianist Calio Alonso, a key person in the organization of this tour in Spain.

Al día siguiente continuamos en la misma ciudad y tuvimos el tercer concierto oficial de la agrupación en Granada, con la característica especial de que cantamos junto a dos coros juveniles de la ciudad, así que éramos más personas en el escenario, pero la tarima era tan grande que aún se podía sumar más gente. Por supuesto hubo demasiado público, no solo por los familiares de los chicos que cantaron con nosotros, sino que esta es la ciudad de nuestro pianista acompañante Calio Alonso, una persona clave en la organización de esta gira por España.

Catedral de Santiago de Compostela

On Sunday, March 24th we traveled by plane to the north of the country and performed our first Holy Week concert in a cathedral. It coincided with the date of death of our Maestro José Antonio Abreu, the creator of our musical institution, and I think we all agree that it was our best concert. There was a special mystique in the place, the sound, we sang very close together because of the limited space and it was the only concert where we had to wear scarves. Many, many people came into the church even though it was at night and the cathedral was full in every corner. Everyone stayed until the end and we sang the most sublime music you can imagine. Music became love in this place where the remains of the apostle Santiago rest.

El Domingo 24 de Marzo viajamos en avión hasta el norte del país e hicimos nuestra primer concierto de Semana Santa en una catedral. Coincidía con la fecha de fallecimiento de nuestro Maestro José Antonio Abreu, el creador de nuestra institución musical, y creo que todos estamos de acuerdo en que fue nuestro mejor concierto. Había una mística especial en el lugar, el sonido, cantamos muy juntos por el poco espacio y fue el único concierto donde nos tuvimos que abrigar con bufandas. Entro mucha, mucha gente a la iglesia a pesar de ser en la noche y la catedral estaba llena en cada rincón. Todos se quedaron hasta el final y cantamos la música más sublime que se pueden imaginar. La música se convirtió en amor en este lugar donde reposan los restos del apóstol Santiago.

Filarmónica de Oviedo

This concert on Monday 25 in Oviedo was very important, since in this city our institution was awarded the Prince of Asturias Prize, and Maestro Abreu, Maestro Gustavo Dudamel and the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra left the name of our country very high. It was the first time that the singers of El Sistema would perform here and we had to maintain the level of quality left by our predecessors. The audience was wonderful, they know about music and made this moment and this city a dream experience for the whole group. I enjoyed Oviedo very much, it was one of the cities I walked the most.

Este concierto del Lunes 25 en Oviedo fue muy importante, ya que en esta ciudad se le otorgó el premio Príncipe de Asturias a nuestra institución, y el Maestro Abreu, el Maestro Gustavo Dudamel y la Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar dejaron el nombre de nuestro país muy en alto. Es la primera vez que los cantantes de El Sistema se presentarían aquí y había que mantener el nivel de calidad que dejaron nuestros antecesores. El público fue maravilloso, conocen de música e hicieron de este momento y de esta ciudad una experiencia de ensueño para toda la agrupación. Disfruté mucho Oviedo, fue una de las ciudades que más caminé.

Seminario Mayor de Comillas

On Tuesday, March 26th we sang at the Church of the Major Seminary of Comillas. Wow, I know I write this a lot, but it was one of my favorites. This concert is the second of my personal top. The place was packed despite how distant it is, one of the most beautiful places we visited on the whole tour and the music resonated in all its splendor. It was the first time we sang to Venezuela and the door at the end of the hall remained open the whole concert as we watched the sun set in the sea behind our director. I never thought I would sing with so much pleasure, tears ran down my face, but it was of happiness. I treasure every second lived in Cantabria and I feel it as a dream, something that only happens to good people, something like paradise ❤️

El Martes 26 de Marzo cantamos en la Iglesia del Seminario Mayor de Comillas. Wow, sé que escribo esto mucho, pero fue de mis favoritos. Este concierto es el segundo de mi top personal. El lugar estaba lleno a pesar de lo distante que es, uno de los sitios más hermosos que visitamos en toda la gira y la música resonó con todo esplendor. Fue la primera vez que le cantamos a Venezuela y la puerta al final de la sala se mantuvo abierta todo el concierto mientras veíamos el sol ocultarse en el mar detrás de nuestra directora. Jamás pensé cantar con tanto placer, las lágrimas corrían por mi rostro, pero era de felicidad. Atesoro cada segundo vivido en Cantabria y lo siento como un sueño, algo que solo le pasa a la gente buena, algo como el paraíso ❤️

Catedral de Burgos

The cold weather turned into pure adrenaline when we arrived in Burgos. It was on Wednesday March 27th that we sang in the cathedral. An ancient and totally gothic place in its architecture that is very well preserved. The space to sing was very small, so the girls were in front at audience level and the boys up near the altar and it still sounded great. Our pianist dared to play the cathedral organ, although it was a bit distant and we still managed it successfully thanks to concentration. This was another very cold place, but there were so many people that you could feel the warmth of the positive energy. Behind those railings that you see at our side there were also long rows of people, we were surrounded and we felt their gratitude towards us, and I think they felt our gratitude towards God.

Ya esto del frío se convirtió en adrenalina pura al llegar a Burgos. Fue el Miércoles 27 de Marzo que cantamos en la catedral. Un lugar antiguo y totalmente gótico en su arquitectura que se conserva muy bien. El espacio para cantar era muy pequeño, así que las chicas estuvieron delante a nivel del público y los varones arriba cerca del altar y aún así sonó genial. Nuestro pianista se atrevió a tocar el órgano de la catedral, aunque estaba un poco distante y aún así lo logramos con éxito gracias a la concentración. Este era otro lugar muy frío, pero fue tanta gente que se sentía el calor de la energía positiva. Detrás de esas rejas que ven a nuestro costado también habían largas hileras de público, estábamos rodeados y sentíamos el agradecimiento de parte de ellos hacia nosotros, y creo que ellos sentían nuestro agradecimiento con Dios.

Acción Social por la Música, Madrid

It is not a surprise that surprise activities come out, even while traveling 🤣 but I am glad to have been part of the few who knew the replica of our musical institution in Madrid. Not all the choir participated, but we enjoyed the birth and development of one of our nuclei in Europe, and we know it is not the only one. It is part of Maestro Abreu's dream of educating through music with a different methodology where the child or teenager studies music and at the same time already belongs to a local choir or orchestra. He does not have to wait years and years of study to take up a musical instrument, and boy, has it worked. To know that outside our borders this dream that was born in Venezuela is being carried out is totally inspiring...

No es una sorpresa que salgan actividades sorpresas, incluso estando de viaje 🤣 pero me alegra haber formado parte de los pocos que conocieron la réplica de nuestra institución musical en Madrid. No participó toda la coral, pero disfrutamos del nacimiento y desarrollo de uno de nuestros núcleos en Europa, y sabemos que no es el único. Es parte del sueño del Maestro Abreu de educar a través de la música con una metodología distinta donde el niño o adolescente estudia la música y a la vez ya pertenece a un coro u orquesta local. No tiene que esperar años y años de estudio para tomar un instrumento musical, y vaya que ha funcionado. Saber que fuera de nuestras fronteras se está llevando a cabo este sueño que nació en Venezuela es totalmente inspirador...

Ateneo de Madrid

Our last concert in Spain took place in Madrid in March and the most inspiring thing is that it was a reunion among Venezuelans, and not only those who live in the city, but also friends from neighboring countries. It was still Holy Week, but we sang a lot of Venezuelan folklore repertoire and several sacred musical arrangements that have become hits of the choir. The former members got up on the small stage to sing with us the last part of the concert and the tears of joy were not long in coming. After the concert was over, the merriment continued for another hour and the celebration that the same music that brought us together keeps us brothers through the years and the distance.

Nuestro último concierto en España se llevó a cabo en Madrid el de Marzo y lo más inspirador es que fue un reencuentro entre venezolanos, y no solo los que viven en la ciudad, sino que se acercaron amigos de países vecinos. Todavía era Semana Santa, pero cantamos mucho repertorio del folclore venezolano y varios arreglos musicales sacros que se han convertido en éxitos de la coral. Los ex miembros se subieron a la pequeña tarima a cantar con nosotros la última parte del concierto y las lágrimas de alegría no se hicieron esperar. Luego de terminado la algarabía siguió como una hora más y la celebración de que la misma música que nos unió nos mantiene siendo hermanos a través de los años y la distancia.
