Celebrating 49 Years in the Orchestras and Choirs System

The musical institution to which I so proudly belong is celebrating its 49th anniversary. Although it has been almost half a century since its formation, I only have 15 years belonging to this world, and I refer to the professional part because in my childhood I spent a great time watching music classes here, but I don't count it because it was also about 15 years between that time and when I returned. Yesterday's concert was totally inspiring for me, I thought I would not enjoy it so much, but it was one of the best of my life in terms of interpretation.

La institución musical a la cual pertenezco con tanto orgullo se encuentra en su aniversario número 49. Aunque ya ha pasado casi medio siglo dese su formación yo solo tengo tengo 15 años perteneciendo a este mundo, y me refiero a la parte profesional porque en la infancia estuve una gran temporada viendo clases de música aquí, pero no lo cuento porque pasaron también como 15 años entre ese momento y cuando regrese. El concierto de ayer fue totalmente inspirador para mí, pensé que no lo disfrutaría tanto, pero fue uno de los mejores de toda mi vida a en cuanto a interpretación.

The anniversary concert was very varied. The orchestra was multigenerational, meaning that there were founding musicians of the institution on stage, accompanied by great teachers and the most talented young people who now shine. In the choir there were already many of us, so there were no former members, only the 90 people of my National Choir Simon Bolivar and 40 people of the Young Choir Angel Sauce. The repertoire of the choir was purely of compositions by Maestro José Antonio Abreu, our eternal honoree for being the founder and the concert varied between choral symphonic works and a solo orchestra participation.

El concierto aniversario fue muy variado. La orquesta era multigeneracional, osea que habían músicos fundadores de la institución en el escenario, acompañado de grandes Maestros y los jóvenes más talentosos que ahora brillan. En el coro ya eramos muchos, así que no participaron antiguos miembros, solo las 90 personas de mi Coral Nacional Simón Bolívar y las 40 personas de la Joven Coral Ángel Sauce. El repertorio de la coral fue netamente de composiciones del Maestro José Antonio Abreu, nuestro homenajeado eterno por ser el fundador y el concierto vario entre obras sinfónico corales y una participación de la orquesta en solitario.

The whole week has been very intense, in fact I have not participated much in Hive, but it was worth it to join fully to my work because it had been a long time where I did not feel in such a special moment like this. This season is proving to be very emotional because they have brought many artists who today have an international career but who in the past were part of our ranks in the orchestra and choir. For example, we performed one of the best versions of the Cantata Criolla, Florentino, el que Cantó con el Diablo, with Maestro Aquiles Machado who came from Spain and the young star Gustavo Castillo who now sings in Milan and was part of our choir.

Toda la semana ha sido muy intensa, de hecho he participado poco en Hive, pero valió la pena incorporarme de lleno a mi trabajo porque tenía mucho tiempo donde no me sentía en un momento tan especial como este. Esta temporada está resultando muy emotiva porque han traído a muchos artistas que hoy tienen una carrera internacional pero que en el pasado formaron parte de nuestras filas en la orquesta y el coro. Por ejemplo, interpretamos una de las mejores versiones de la Cantata Criolla, Florentino, el que Cantó con el Diablo, con el Maestro Aquiles Machado que llegó desde España y la joven estrella Gustavo Castillo que ahora canta en Milán y formaba parte de nuestra coral.

Since I entered the institution in 2009 everyone was talking about Hector Villa-Lobos' Chorus 10, a Brazilian choral symphonic work that apparently was performed a lot, but strangely I had never sung it. I enjoyed it enormously and maybe I will talk about it later because it deserves a special post. For us it is inevitable to close a concert of this magnitude without performing Handel's Hallelujah, because it is a work that has become a hymn in the institution and it is always one of the most emotional moments for me.

Desde que entré a la institución en el 2009 todos hablaban sobre el Chorus 10 de Héctor Villa-Lobos, una obra sinfónico coral brasileña que al parecer se interpretaba mucho, pero extrañamente yo nunca la había cantado. Le tomé un gusto enorme y quizás hable sobre ella más adelante porque merece un post especial. Para nosotros es inevitable cerrar un concierto de esta magnitud sin interpretar el Hallelujah de Handel, porque es una obra que se ha convertido en un himno en la institución y siempre es uno de los momentos más emotivos para mí.

The best of all is that the celebration did not end with the concert, we continued celebrating until after midnight, although my feet did not thank me for it. I left so tired that I almost didn't publish today's post, but the satisfaction is infinite and I'm ready to start a new week with great challenges. Now we have to record an album, the master classes with the guest masters, and prepare Fauré's Requiem and our sacred a cappella repertoire for our next tour that starts in mid-March, so we will have two very intense weeks, but I know they will be wonderful for those of us who love what we do. I don't wish I were anywhere else right now...

Lo mejor de todo es que la celebración no culminó con el concierto, seguimos celebrando hasta pasada la media noche, aunque mis pies no me lo agradecieron. Salí tan cansado que casi no publico mi post de hoy, pero la satisfacción es infinita y ya estoy listo para iniciar una nueva semana con grandes retos. Ahora nos queda grabar un disco, las clases magistrales con los maestros invitados, y preparar el Requiem de Fauré y nuestro repertorio sacro a capella para nuestra siguiente gira que comienza a mediados de Marzo, así que tendremos dos semanas muy intensas, pero sé que serán maravillosas para quienes amamos lo que hacemos. No desearía estar en otro lugar justo ahora...
