An Inspiring Music Week!

This week was wonderful, for the third time since I have been in the Simon Bolivar National Choir of Venezuela I have had the pleasure of working with Maestro Christophe Talmont. I know I usually say the same thing with every musical experience, but it really seems that we always seem to surpass ourselves with every step we take. We have not had concerts since our tour in Spain, a month ago, but during these weeks we have been preparing the Ein Deutsches Requiem by the German Johannes Brahms, and wow, I dare to say with other colleagues that it is possibly the biggest musical challenge we have had in recent years.

Esta semana fue maravillosa, por tercera vez desde que estoy en la Coral Nacional Simón Bolívar de Venezuela he tenido el placer de trabajar con el Maestro Christophe Talmont. Ya sé que suelo decir lo mismo con cada experiencia musical, pero es que realmente parece que siempre nos superamos a nosotros mismos con cada paso que damos. No hemos tenido conciertos desde nuestra gira por España, hace ya un mes, pero durante estas semanas hemos estado preparando el Ein Deutsches Requiem del alemán Johannes Brahms, y wow, me atrevo a decir junto a otros compañeros que posiblemente sea el mayor desafío musical que hemos tenido los últimos años.

Here among us, the music of Brahms has always been a little rough for the choir, I have almost seven years in the group and I think we have only sung a Brahms chorale as part of our daily repertoire, but many works have been read and almost none of them are sung in concerts, in fact in Spain we only sing a work of this composer, and it was done only once, in the city of Oviedo. There is always some detail that makes us decide that it is better not to perform it, I do not know if it is because of the complexity or because the mood is not within reach of so much virtuosity, but I think the time has come to begin to interpret the music of Brahms as the greats, and it is thanks to the help and teachings of Maestro Talmont.

Aquí entre nos, la música de Brahms siempre ha sido un poco ruda para la coral, tengo casi siete años en la agrupación y creo que solo hemos cantado un coral de Brahms como parte de nuestro repertorio cotidiano, pero se han leido muchas obras y casi ninguna llega a ser cantada en conciertos, de hecho en España solo cantamos una obra de este compositor, y se hizo una sola vez, en la ciudad de Oviedo. Siempre hay algún detalle que nos hace decidir que es mejor no interpretarla, no sé si por la complejidad o porque los ánimos no están al alcance de tanto virtuosismo, pero creo que ha llegado el momento de comenzar a interpretar la música de Brahms como los grandes, y es gracias a la ayuda y enseñanzas del Maestro Talmont.

The rehearsals have been glorious, that's how I feel. I don't think we have ever done a choral symphonic production where we have respected so much the nuances, and the Maestro doesn't let a single mistake go by. He knows the work so well that he seems to be the composer himself, and he has made us put all our soul into each phrase, no matter how simple or short it may be. As I told you recently, Brahms' requiem is not like the others, it is written in German and is not based on the Catholic liturgical text, in fact it is a requiem written for those of us who are alive, and not for the dead, it is music to give hope again to sad people who have lost a loved one.

Los ensayos han sido gloriosos, así los siento yo. Creo que nunca habíamos hecho un montaje sinfónico coral donde respetáramos tanto los matices, y es que el Maestro no deja pasar ni un error. Conoce tanto la obra que pareciera el mismo compositor y nos ha hecho poner toda nuestra alma a cada frase, por más simple o corta que sea. Como les dije hace poco, el réquiem de Brahms no es igual que los demás, está escrito en alemán y no se basa en el texto litúrgico católico, de hecho es un réquiem escrito para quienes estamos vivos, y no para los muertos, es música para volver a dar esperanza a las personas tristes que han perdido un ser querido.

He told us that Brahms wrote this music after the death of his mother, so there is a lot of feeling in each of its seven numbers. Fugues reign, something very characteristic of the composer where the counterpoint between voices becomes a magical experience. There is a lot of reference to Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, and I particularly find moments with the same spirit of Resurrection, fifth movement of Mahler's Second Symphony and the requiem of Gabriel Fauré, truly a genius of romantic music, but I think our conductor's intention gives it a different energy and we have never been so committed to Brahms.

Nos dijo que Brahms escribió esta música luego de la muerte de su mamá, así que hay mucho sentimiento en cada uno de sus siete números. Reinan las fugas, algo muy característico del compositor donde el contrapunto entre voces se convierte en una experiencia mágica. Hay mucha referencia a la Novena Sinfonía de Beethoven, y particularmente encuentro momentos con el mismo espíritu de Resurrection, quinto movimiento de la Segunda Sinfonía de Mahler y el réquiem de Gabriel Fauré, realmente un genio de la música romántica, pero creo que la intensión de nuestro director le da una energía distinta y nunca habíamos estado tan comprometidos con Brahms.

This picture is from 2018, when I worked with the Maestro for the first time, at that time we sang Psalm 42, Wie der Hirsch schreit by Mendelssohn, I was only one year old in the chorale, and I think I was still singing with the baritones. From the very first moment I admired him very much, I think he is one of the conductors who puts the most emphasis on high quality music. The rehearsals already make me feel the musical ecstasy, so I imagine how our concert will look like, which will be exactly in seven days. I can't wait to join the orchestra, which will be smaller than the choir, since we will be doing it with the Simón Bolívar Chamber Orchestra, without a doubt the expectations are very high.... Desde el primer momento lo admiré mucho, creo que es uno de los directores que más énfasis hace en que la música sea de alta calidad. Los ensayos ya me hacen sentir el éxtasis musical, así que imagino como quedará nuestro concierto, que será exactamente en siete días. No veo la hora de unirnos a la orquesta, que será más pequeña que el coro, ya que lo haremos con la Orquesta de Cámara Simón Bolívar, sin duda alguna las expectativas están muy altas...
