A Requiem that still makes itself felt...

Today is #tbt Thursday, and with great emotion I want to share this anecdote made music that happened in May 2022. A concert that we really do not remember much because the whole group was focused on other events, such as the preparation of our last national tour through the center and west of the country, plus the assembly of this work was only two weeks and with many interruptions, and wow, the choral reading was very, very complex. I don't think we have ever sung such dense harmonies.

The thing is that since a few years ago we have become the symphonic choir of the Requiems; these beautiful funeral masses that although they share the same text always have a different atmosphere depending on the composer. We have performed Mozart, Verdi, we sing Fauré's in almost all our concerts in Spain, but without orchestra, only with piano, which is a different experience both for the audience and for us, and right now we are reading and assembling Brahms' Requiem, which seems to be one of the most complex and has the peculiarity of being in German and not in Latin. The fact is that these days we have inevitably talked about this concert we had two years ago, when against all odds we performed Leoncavallo's Requiem.

Maestro Janos Acs

The conductor of this concert was the Hungarian Janos Acs, who is with me in the picture above. I remember that this was a premiere in the American continent, since this revised version had not been performed on this side of the Atlantic, so all eyes were on us. The Venezuelan soloists were my Maestra Betzabeth Talavera, Baritone Gaspar Colón and the young tenor Reinaldo Droz, all in our home, the "Simón Bolívar" Concert Hall in the city of Caracas.

As I told you, this week we have been talking about all the requiems we have sung, at least we tenors who have had individual work and we all agree that Leoncavallo's Requiem was one of the most complicated to understand and that that time was very difficult for us. It has been one of our biggest challenges, but honestly we do not remember even one of its phrases, it was not melodic at all and everything happened in a very short period of time, but what we did made us grow as a group and gave a new achievement to our musical institution, as well as new agreements.

After this concert there was so much, but so much work that this folder with the photographs has been forgotten in my computer for years and this week I decided to look for it and write my post, although I do not remember exactly all the feeling 😅 it has been nice to go to youtube and find several excerpts of the concert like the one I have shared above, even the full concert I will leave here below for those who want to enjoy this work of Italian composer Ruggero Leoncavallo. I hope you liked this post, I wish you a happy Thursday everyone!...

How are you dear friend@jesuslnrs good morning
How beautiful it is to read how your musical career has been and the challenges that you have had to overcome like the “Leoncavallo Requiem” so that as an individual musician, or as a group, you have grown and at the same time reached new agreements.
Thank you very much for sharing these memories of your artistic career.

I love that although we sing the same liturgical text over and over again, each composer gives it a different meaning with his inspiration and perspective. This has been one of the most powerful Requiem, although it came into our lives at a time of stress and I have forgotten many of its phrases hehe, thanks for commenting my friend 🙏

2022 - the time when I was preparing for exams of university and you guys were entangled in diverse and dense harmonies.

Hungarian Janos Acs

I am thinking that in your professional years you may have met so many professional people from other nationalities. It's interesting. I always remain curious to meet people from other sides of borders.

I hope I could also save my all photos in laptop and hope those all will not be lost.

Yes brother, that has happened since I joined the institution in 2009. There are many agreements with artists from other countries. In a couple of weeks we will have a concert directed by the French Christophe Talmont, and each of these artists brings a different perspective of the music and the regions where they come from; that makes us grow professionally as a group and have a high level seen from the international point of view. I feel that I am nothing special 😅 so I enjoy being here and I consider it a gift from God to me 🙏
