Vocals or Instruments: Which Path to Choose?
I have always been fond of music, particularly singing. For as long as I could remember, I used to sing songs in the shower or hum to melodies playing on the radio. Sometimes, I would imagine that, someday, I would become a popular vocalist and perform in different theatres across the globe. But I also envied those who could pick up a guitar and strum out great tunes and awesome riffs. I wanted to play my heart out, to let the music speak through the instrument I was holding.
And so it was early this year that I finally got my first guitar. I realized that it was high time I learned how to play this highly versatile instrument that has for years given me a lot of joy listening to some of the artists. I also want to be the singer-songwriter that belts out strong vocals and plays catchy guitar riffs. The question is: which is better for someone who wants to become a musician - vocal or instrumental?
Well, as far as I am concerned, I believe that incorporating both is perfect. Still, vocals have never been a problem for me, as I have been singing since I was a child and while I would never compare myself to Mariah Carey, I do know how to sing rather well. As much as it is easier to learn when one is young, it is even more difficult to start learning how to play the guitar when you are an adult.
I like artists who are able to perform well with different musical instruments and sing out their emotions using their voices. I would like to become a singer-songwriter and play guitar or piano for my songs. I think that competence in both singing and playing an instrument is useful in helping artists communicate their message.
But while some people can easily relate to songs with vocals alone or only an instrument, talented instrumentalists such as Jimi Hendrix or Eddie Van Halen are capable of provoking powerful emotions by the mere fact of playing their instruments. If you think about some powerful voices that are worth listening to, you can name Whitney Houston or Freddie Mercury, who can actually make you feel goose bumps with the range of their voices, the way they sing and the emotions they convey.
As for the performers who selected music as their field of endeavor, the decision whether to become a singer or an instrumentalist depends on one's choice and abilities. Great singers connect emotionally through lyrics, whether those lyrics are familiar or even cheesy, and through vocal ability. Singers are characterized by excellent vocal mastery with proper technique and control over their voice to create sublime tunes.
If you are more inclined towards lyrics and poetry, then becoming a well-trained singer with emphasis on emotions would be apt. If you desire to create marvelous technical skills for producing amazing musical passages, committing yourself to instrumental training may be the way to go. It is definitely not obligatory to excel in both to become a musical artist and address audiences.
For myself, this year I am going to maintain the rigorous guitar practicing schedule along with focusing on singing. One of the things I like about songs is that there are ones that have musical and lyrical puzzles in them. My voice will likely always be stronger, but I aim to at least reach the proficient level of guitar in order to write full songs.
For years I marveled at singer-songwriters who were able to so effortlessly match powerful singing with musicianship. Now, I am getting my first guitar as I strive to become part of their company someday – an independent musician who translates words and beats into tunes that tell my story. It's a tall order, but that's something I'll keep pursuing because music is my biggest love. My voice and guitar will be instrumental in kindling that passion.
