February 2nd, 1995 was a day to remember for Stevie, not because of a musical milestone, a Grammy or a platinum-selling album. This was a date of joy and celebration because Wonder's first child was born, a little baby girl (Who's not a baby anymore) called Aisha.

While we weren't at that exact moment, we can say that It was a source of joy and excitement for wonder, not only because of his new role as father, but as an artistic inspiration.

This culminated in Wonder recording something so personal, yet so relatable for all fathers: Isn't she Lovely, track in which he plays all instruments except for some keyboard parts, played by Greg Phillinganes.

From the first moments of the song, we can figure out what It is about. The cry of a newborn welcomes us into a delightful experience that makes us feel Stevie's happiness.

This is accentuated by dragging us further into the life of this icon, with a recording of Stevie bathing Aisha as a toddler along with his then-partner Yolanda Simmons.

While this song can bring tears to many people's eyes, this is one of the best examples where sincere emotion can be captured, a thing that Stevie Wonder is an expert at.

The writing process

Accompanied by lush instrumental passages that give life to the song, this track is rather loose in Its writing process. Three 8-bar verses give us all the information we need to confirm this song is about not only a random baby, but Stevie Wonder's own child.

What ties all verses together are two refrains: One at the beginning and one at the end of each section.

For the first one:

Isn't she lovely? (In verses 1 and 3)
Isn't she pretty? (Slight variation in verse 2)

And the second one, at the end:

Made from love

The Lyrics

Shoutout to Song Meaning and Facts

Isn't she lovely?
Isn't she wonderful?
Isn't she precious?
Less than one minute old
I never thought through love, we'd be
Making one as lovely as she
But isn't she lovely? Made from love

In the first verse, Stevie asks himself how something so beautiful as a little piece of joy could be made through love. A thought that might go over many fathers' heads when they see their kids for the first time. In the second verse:

Isn't she pretty?
Truly the angel's best
Boy, I'm so happy
We have been heaven blessed
I can't believe what God has done
Through us, He's given life to one
But isn't she lovely? Made from love

Still in a state of disbelief, the singer highlights his emotional high, seeing the little kid that has now filled his heart, thanking God for doing so. And finally, for the third verse:

Isn't she lovely?
Life and love are the same
Life is Aisha
The meaning of her name
Londie, it could have not been done
Without you who conceived the one
That's so very lovely, made from love

Here, he tells us that life and love are one, feeling like love is the thing that gives him life. He also talks about the meaning of Aisha's name, an Arabic word that means "living" or "full of life". Finally, he concludes by thanking Yolanda for bringing so much love into his life.

Still being played in many people's radios decades after, Isn't she lovely is more than a song. This is a feeling that only those who are happy of becoming parents can share.

Initially, this song wasn't planned to be released as a single, due to a problem between Wonder and his label, where the first didn't want to cut the track's original length of 6:35 to fit the 7-inch, 45rpm single of the 70s'.

In spite of this, after Songs in the Key of Life Release, heavy radio airplay brought Isn't She Lovely to the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart at number 22 in January, 1977.

Almost 4 decades later, the song would climb Its way to the charts, this time in UK. After playing the song in the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II in 2012, Wonder's love letter to Fatherhood would rose to #94 in the UK charts.

Isn't she lovely is a sincere tribute from a father to his daughter, highlighting the joy that someone can feel by seeing the product of love after 9 months. It's because of this that this track will continue playing for years to come.
