(ESP-ENG) Un poco de música alternativa!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
When we talk about alternative music many times we don't know very well what it is about. The way I see it is the music that is not within the musical genres that we know, I think this is not 100% accurate but it is true that we can listen to some songs which may be difficult to pigeonhole them into a specific sound. Today I decided to bring you three examples that may fit well with this definition besides being great songs, I don't know if you know them, I would think that at least one of them do, so without further ado let's go with this small selection.
- Portugal. The Man - Feel It Still
Portugal. The Man is an American band that focuses on rock. I wouldn't know if this song is pure rock but an alternative one if it could be. The first time I heard this song was about 6-7 years ago or so, it was just coming out of the oven, in one of these talent shows, I remember that a young guy sang it and he really nailed it in interpretation and intonation. That's when I looked it up and since then I haven't stopped listening to it. What strikes me the most is the high-pitched tone of the vocalist, I feel that it is very particular and very catchy, I think that if he had another voice it wouldn't be the same. The lyrics are very cool because they tell us about that person who had vices, addictions, etc. and was able to improve his life and leave all that behind. “I still feel it” is the literal translation and it is precisely that, many times he feels the need to go back to those steps but then he remembers that he has something to fight for and so he moves on. The rhythm, the instrumentation, the musicianship, everything on this track is top notch. It's short but really good.
- Hozier - Take Me To Church
If you want to listen to a powerful song, this is the one. Hozier is an Irish singer-songwriter who has a great voice, very thick and in low tones that makes his songs sound more memorable than they already are. Same story with the previous one only this one I heard on the radio. It happens to me that I am a person who chooses songs through the melody or music rather than the lyrics, I tend to listen first to how it sounds and if I like it then I dedicate myself to listen/read the lyrics and thus close the cycle. The detail here is that the lyrics of this song are very top and that touches sensitive issues that are always in vogue for everyone. Basically what it expresses is that everyone should be free to live their lives as they are regardless of race, creed, sexual orientation or any aspect that can be used to discriminate. In the video we see a persecution of a person for any of the reasons given. It is not a religious song although it may seem so, it has nothing to do with it but it does talk about going to church as a sign of hypocrisy when you want to go to look for answers and because you are the way you are many times it doesn't give them to you. It is a very good song, it is worth listening to it.
- Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Murder On The Dancefloor
How important can social media and film itself be in someone's career? - Well, Sophie Ellis-Bextor could answer that. Earlier this year a movie came out called “Saltburn”, a real gem if you ask me, and because of that film this song started to take a very drastic and upward momentum. The song in itself is amazing but it was in a library stored deep in the musical archives until the film came along and catapulted it, well the film and then social media. I like her perfectly because she usually sings pop but this song is on the border of alternative pop. This is a song that is more than 20 years old and it was in the middle of 2024 that it hit another big boom. The video is very cool, with some comedy because the lyrics talk about a murder on the dance floor; it is simply a dance competition where Sophie, the protagonist, eliminates one by one her rivals and threatens the judge to give her the winner. It is a super cheerful song, has some violins that give it a very cool touch and a very catchy melody. Great song.
