Estamos en una era donde la música tiende a ser lo más monótona y parecida posible, cada dÃa que pasa pareciera que es más complicado resaltar, sobresalir o simplemente encontrar algo diferente, esto último desde el lado del oyente. No siempre fue asÃ, a lo largo de la historia contemporánea han surgido estilos que en su momento fueron verdaderos "boom" y que llegaron a revolucionar mucho el ambiente musical, siempre desde menos a más y uno de estos casos más increÃble de la musica es el city pop. Traigo este tema a estos lados porque escuchando música la plataforma en cuestión de manera aleatoria me llevó para esos lados, cosa que después me costó salir.

With each passing day, it seems more difficult to stand out, excel, or simply find something different—at least from the listener's perspective. It wasn't always like this. Throughout contemporary history, styles have emerged that were true sensations in their time, revolutionizing the music scene, always progressing from less to more. One of the most incredible examples of this is city pop. I bring this up because while listening to music on a random platform, I stumbled into that world, and it was hard to get away from it afterward.
Para aquellos que no saben que es el city pop es un género musical nacido en Japón por allá a finales de los 70, principios de los 80 como una forma de hacer suyos el pop occidental, es como una adaptación para que encajara mejor en la vida del joven japonés. El jazz, R&B, funk, disco, son algunos de los sonidos que se mezclan para dar cabida a una música impresionante. El dÃa de hoy quiero compartir con ustedes tres de las canciones más top e icónicas de este mundo para que, en caso de que les guste, comiencen a escucharlas y a conocer más sobre algo que para el occidental no es tan conocido.
For those unfamiliar with city pop, it's a musical genre born in Japan in the late 70s and early 80s as a way to adapt Western pop to better suit the lives of young Japanese people. Jazz, R&B, funk, and disco are some of the sounds that blend together to create this impressive music. Today, I want to share three of the most iconic and popular songs in this genre with you so that, if you like them, you can start listening and learn more about something that isn't as well-known in the West.
- Plastic Love - Mariya Takeuchi
Creo que una de las razones del porque este género está renaciendo, desde hace unos cuantos años para acá, es sin dudas el anime. La masificación de todo lo que tiene que ver con estas animaciones japonesas ha hecho que mucha gente se enamore de esta musica ya que es utilizada en algunos casos en sus openings o endings. Plastic Love es una de los temas más sonados e importantes del género. Sacado en 1984 nos habla del desamor, de esa vez cuando a uno le rompen el corazón y todo se vuelve frÃo, oscuro y monótono al punto de que la confianza desaparece, el compromiso desaparece y que a partir de ese momento lo unico que se va a buscar es jugar y no tomarse nada en serio, de ahà el titulo de "amor de plástico". El sonido es increÃble, sobretodo el bajo y guitarra, son instrumentos que están muy refinados, todo mezclado entre sintetizadores. Es una combinación de todo lo bueno, la letra es muy cool, la voz de Mariya es increÃble, muy nostálgica y melancólica. Gran canción.
I think one of the reasons this genre has been experiencing a resurgence in recent years is undoubtedly anime. The widespread popularity of everything related to these Japanese animations has led many people to fall in love with this music, as it's often used in opening and ending themes. "Plastic Love" is one of the most popular and important songs in the genre. Released in 1984, it speaks of heartbreak, of that time when your heart is broken and everything becomes cold, dark, and monotonous to the point that trust and commitment vanish, and from that moment on, all you want to do is play around and not take anything seriously—hence the title "plastic love." The sound is incredible, especially the bass and guitar; they're very refined instruments, all blended with synthesizers. It's a combination of everything good. The lyrics are very cool, and Mariya's voice is incredible, very nostalgic and melancholic. A great song.
- Sparkle - Tatsuro Yamashita
El señor Tatsuro es el esposo de Mariya, además de ser cantante es productor y es claramente un genio en todos lo sentidos. Creo que esta canción es de las que más me gusta del género y lo es básicamente porque lo tiene absolutamente todo. Primero la parte melódica. A mi pasa que cuando escucho una canción y si esta se me queda grabada en la mente se automáticamente que me va a gustar. Las canciones hay que escucharlas varias veces para llegar a esa conclusión, a mi me bastó con solo par de ocasiones. Lo segundo que tiene es la instrumentación. La guitarra del intro, los metales y de nuevo el bajo es una maravilla que tendrÃa que ser escuchada por todo el mundo. Y lo tercero pero no menos importante es las referencias que oÃmos, por ejemplo yo oigo cosas de Earth, Wind & Fire y hasta de los Jackson 5. No digo que sea una copia, jamás lo es pero al tener cosas del funk y el pop el sonido es muy similar. La letra es un viaje también, habla del amor, del universo y de dioses. Como digo en el titulo, una verdadera joya.
Mr. Tatsuro is Mariya's husband. Besides being a singer, he's a producer and is clearly a genius in every sense of the word. I think this song is one of my favorites in the genre, and that's basically because it has absolutely everything. First, the melody. When I hear a song and it sticks in my head, I automatically know I'm going to like it. You have to listen to songs several times to reach that conclusion; for me, it only took a couple of listens. The second thing it has is the instrumentation. The guitar in the intro, the horns, and again, the bass are a marvel that everyone should hear. And the third, but no less important, thing is the influences we hear. For example, I hear elements of Earth, Wind & Fire and even the Jackson 5. I'm not saying it's a copy—it never is—but with its funk and pop elements, the sound is very similar. The lyrics are a journey too; they talk about love, the universe, and gods. As I say in the title, a true gem.
- Midnight Pretenders - Tomoko Aran
Con esto cierro. Es muy complicado calificar canciones del city pop porque todas tienen una magia y esencia única que te llevan a lugares a los que muy probablemente nunca hemos estado. Por ejemplo, yo escucho esto y me veo caminando por Tokio a la 1 de la madrugada con la esperanza de conocer a alguien en el camino. "Pretendientes de media noche" habla exactamente de eso, de esas personas que se conocen una noche pero todo queda ahÃ, por diferentes razones no pasa más nada. La suavidad que tiene la voz de Tomoko Aran hace que el que escucha se sumerja en un trance imaginando y pensando cosas. DirÃa que de las tres es la más melancólica y profunda. El estilo pues es un funk mucho más lento, es bastante más instrumental. Es muy sutil y creo que eso hace que guste más, es algo con clase, como lo es el city pop en general.

For example, when I listen to this, I picture myself walking through Tokyo at 1 a.m., hoping to meet someone along the way. "Midnight Suitors" is exactly about that: people who meet one night, but nothing more happens, for various reasons. The softness of Tomoko Aran's voice draws the listener into a trance, imagining and thinking. I'd say it's the most melancholic and profound of the three. The style is a much slower, more instrumental kind of funk. It's very subtle, and I think that's what makes it so appealing; it's classy, ​​like city pop in general.
