Por allá en la década de los noventas existió una "rivalidad" en la música que trascendió mundialmente y es que aquellos años fueron conocidos por el surgimiento de las llamadas Boy Bands, a donde voltearas y miraras había un grupo de 4-5 jóvenes haciendo musica y tratando de pegar y de ser exitosos. Pero esa lucha se redujo a una cosa de dos grupos que al final serían tan influyentes que incluso hoy en día siguen sonando y girando por algunos rincones de nuestro planeta. Hablo de esto porque la semana pasada comentamos acerca de Timberlake y pues lo que hizo con NSYNC fue lo que lo ayudó a ser quien es hoy en día. Por el lado de los BSB si que es verdad que ninguno destacó de la forma en la que lo hizo Justin pero aún así siento que tuvieron más impacto en su momento.

But that struggle was reduced to a thing of two groups that in the end would be so influential that even today they are still sounding and touring in some corners of our planet. I talk about this because last week we talked about Timberlake and what he did with NSYNC is what helped him become who he is today. On the BSB side it is true that none of them stood out the way Justin did but I still feel they had more impact at the time.

- Backstreet Boys - I Want It That Way

Con esta canción pasa algo y es que fue la referencia de muchas cosas que pasaron después. No recuerdo un tema y sobre todo un video que haya sido tan referencial como este y es que este concepto, vestuario y la misma coreografía fue usada por muchos tanto para imitar como para parodiar, el ejemplo más claro es el de Blink 182. Hay que recordar que los noventas fueron un torbellino de estilos musicales en donde lo que predominaba era el rock con el dance colándose por los lados pero eso de que cuando un grupo de 5 hombres se pusieron a cantar baladas pop románticas sin dudas para la musica fue algo raro y al mismo tiempo una grata e inesperada sorpresa. La revolución de los BSB fue masiva, ellos nacieron en 1993 pero fue hasta finales de la década cuando realmente comenzaron a sonar abrumadoramente con su disco "Millenium". Ellos eran más vocales y menos de bailar, esto no implica que no lo hicieran pero no era la firma de ellos; unos cantaban más que otros pero en estos casos lo que importaba era el conjunto, como se escuchaban juntos y la verdad es que sonaban muy top, la armonía de las voces era y es lo que los caracteriza. Este tema es el más grande de ellos, no es mi favorito, pero para los efectos de lo que estamos hablando era necesario. Mi predilecto es "Show me the meaning of being lonely".

With this song something happens and that is that it was the reference of many things that happened later. I do not remember a song and above all a video that has been as referential as this one and this concept, costumes and the same choreography was used by many both to imitate and to parody, the clearest example is Blink 182. We must remember that the nineties were a whirlwind of musical styles where what predominated was rock with dance sneaking in from all sides but that when a group of 5 men began to sing romantic pop ballads without doubt for the music was something rare and at the same time a pleasant and unexpected surprise. The BSB revolution was massive, they were born in 1993 but it was not until the end of the decade when they really started to sound overwhelmingly with their album "Millenium". They were more vocal and less dancing, this does not imply that they did not do it but it was not their signature; some sang more than others but in these cases what mattered was the ensemble, how they sounded together and the truth is that they sounded very top, the harmony of the voices was and is what characterizes them. This song is the greatest of them, it is not my favorite, but for the purposes of what we are talking about it was necessary. My favorite is "Show me the meaning of being lonely".

- *NSYNC - It's Gonna Be Me

Vamos con la otra cara de la moneda. NSYNC salió a la luz dos años después que la BSB, es decir, en 1995 y lo hicieron pisando sumamente fuerte. La cosa acá es que ellos comenzaron a sonar justo después del que mundo ya conociera a los otros cinco por lo que tarea era más complicada, de ahí a que yo creo que por eso es que las personas siempre los vieron a ellos como los "imitadores" de los Backstreet Boys, algo demás injusto y absurdo y es que a leguas se nota lo diferente que son. Como les dije NSYNC es más de bailar, de coreografías y eso se ve en sus videos, siempre se están moviéndose de un lado a otro y ya solo con eso es más que suficiente para establecer diferencias. Otra cosa es que siempre se ve a un Justin como el líder, cosa que en la otra acera no, Timberlake es de los que más canta y siempre va a la cabeza del grupo. Pero saben una cosa, y aquí vamos con la primera opinión, hombre por hombre creo que los NSYNC podían cantar mejor que los BSB, había más calidad en las voces aunque ese no fuera tanto su fuerte, las voces de Justin, JC y de Lance Bass eran o son realmente buenas. NSYNC era más movido, se apartaron un poco de ese pop balada y se fueron más hacia el dance pop. Aunque hay que comentar que hicieron algo que los Backstreet Boys no y es cantar en español, sacaron una versión de "This i promise you" en la voz de Justin y JC y eso amigos, fue un verdadero éxito.

Let's go with the other side of the coin. NSYNC came to light two years after BSB, that is to say, in 1995 and they did it stomping extremely hard. The thing here is that they began to sound just after the world already knew the other five so the task was more complicated, hence I think that's why people always saw them as the "imitators" of the Backstreet Boys, something else unfair and absurd and is that leagues you can tell how different they are. As I told you NSYNC is more about dancing, choreographies and that can be seen in their videos, they are always moving from one side to the other and that alone is more than enough to establish differences. Another thing is that Justin is always seen as the leader, which on the other side is not, Timberlake is the one who sings the most and always goes to the head of the group. But you know one thing, and here we go with the first opinion, man for man I think NSYNC could sing better than BSB, there was more quality in the voices even if that was not so much their forte, the voices of Justin, JC and Lance Bass were or are really good. NSYNC was more uptempo, they moved away a bit from the pop ballad and went more towards dance pop. Although it is necessary to comment that they did something that the Backstreet Boys did not and that is to sing in Spanish, they released a version of "This i promise you" in the voice of Justin and JC and that friends, was a real success.

Ahora, ustedes se imaginan que estos dos grupos se unieran e hicieran una gira juntos? - eso se habló en su momento pero al final no quedó en nada. Los dos videos que les dejé arriba es una muestra de lo que sería, en el primero con una canción de BSB y en el segundo con "BYE BYE BYE" de NSYNC. La realidad es que esa rivalidad la crearon los mismos fanáticos por buscar defender sus gustos musicales, siempre ha pasado y seguirá ocurriendo. Para mi es complicado elegir, de hecho no lo voy a hacer porque cada banda es distinta, tiene sonidos diferentes, estilos diferentes, hay canciones que me gustan más que otras pero eso no quita la calidad de los 10 tipos que pusieron a cantar y a bailar a casi medio planeta a finales de los 90, principios de los 2000. Al final es un tema de gustos y como estos son tan poco objetivos todo dependerá del oído con el que se escuche, en mi lista de reproducción tengo canciones de los dos grupos y todas las disfruto, de eso se trata.

Now, can you imagine these two groups joining forces and touring together? - That was talked about at the time but in the end it came to nothing. The two videos I left above are a sample of what it would be like, the first one with a BSB song and the second one with "BYE BYE BYE BYE" by NSYNC. The reality is that this rivalry was created by the same fans looking to defend their musical tastes, it has always happened and will continue to happen. For me it is complicated to choose, in fact I am not going to do it because each band is different, has different sounds, different styles, there are songs that I like more than others but that does not take away the quality of the 10 guys who made almost half the planet sing and dance at the end of the 90s, beginning of the 2000s. In the end it is a matter of taste and as these are so little objective everything will depend on the ear with which you listen, in my playlist I have songs from both groups and I enjoy them all, that's what it's all about.

Mira yo siempre de irreverente si la gente decía BSB yo decía el otro je,je,je. Al final, no me supe nunca una canción en realidad ni fui a sus conciertos, mucho menos me supe los nombres mas allá del del Justin, así que me da igual. Solo me queda recordar a los dos grupos como los ídolos que fueron y el hito que marcaron en nuestra década ¡Honor para los dos!

Es verdad que los BSB a nivel de nombre fueron más conocidos y una prueba es lo que dices, la gente solo se quedó con Justin mientras que con los otros se sabían todo. Creo que el ser los primeros marcó un poco.
