(ESP-ENG) Green Day - The sound of a generation!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
There are many groups which throughout history have been kind of pioneers in what to put sound to a generation is concerned, naming them here would be endless but some that are undoubtedly in the limelight are these Americans. It is strange to think that this band is more than 30 years old and it does not seem so, many would believe that they were born in the 2000s or late 90s but nothing could be further from the truth, they were born in 1986. When you think of their music you usually associate it, obviously to rock-punk, but mostly to the best era of MTV and especially to those typical teen movies of a little more than 20 years ago. I think that despite all the years that have passed I would think that this is a band that is still alive in the hearts and ears of the fans since the songs that sounded the most are really great hits and those are some of them that we will listen to here today.
- Wake Me Up When September Ends
We start with one of the best classics they have because they combine ballad, rock and an emotional lyrics and message. Billie Joe had, or has, the ability to interpret his songs very well no matter what genre they are in. The song begins in a soft way, almost in an acoustic way and it is that we are in front of a theme that felt, sad, melancholic for what that punk of them did not fit much here. To give you some context, this song was written by Billie in relation to the death of his father from cancer when he was just a child. It's a lyric that speaks to the feeling of losing someone and what it means to everyone involved. It's like a reminder of the good times and that they are unlikely to come back. It also talks about the fact that there will always be someone to support you, in those complicated moments it is very difficult to be completely alone, although it can happen. As I said it has its part of soft ballad but in the middle of the song starts a rock with a powerful drums, I repeat it does not become the punk characteristic of them but if a rhythm that is very consistent with the context of the song. It is a very good song, one of my favorites because coincidentally I lost an important family member in the month of September. If you haven't listened to it, I invite you to do so because even the video is quite good and worth watching.
- Basket Case
Without fear of being wrong, I think it is their most commercial song, even though it is not their most played song. It is one of those songs that many people take as a reference when they want to put together a band with friends, in fact in those days this happened a lot, Basket Case was always in everyone's repertoire. Here we raise the tempo to the point of falling slightly into punk and perhaps a little into the alternative rock very typical of the nineties. The video is iconic because it's them playing like in a mental institution and it's very much in keeping with the lyrics themselves. He is a guy who is always complaining, who has a very sad and boring life, so he is always confusing that boredom with paranoia. He doesn't really know for sure what's wrong with him, he's not sure if he's on drugs or if he's just sick in the head. Honestly it is a very random song but it has a very big meaning for many people because it is practically an anthem of a generation, as I mentioned in the title of this post. Listening to this song takes me back to my 10 years more or less when I started to know Anglo-Saxon music, thanks to these bands was that little by little I became interested in this music to the point that it was what I always got to hear. Maybe it's nostalgia but it's another great theme of this American band.
- Boulevard Of Broken Dreams
The song to loneliness. American Idiot is the album that made these songs known, perhaps the best they have released, and therefore if you listen to some of these songs you will realize that there is a certain common thread that unites several of their stories. Basically this song talks about being alone in the world and in life, walking through empty streets and entering the boulevard of broken dreams where the only company is our shadow. It can also be interpreted as a song of desperation on the part of this loneliness to be found by someone and thus overcome all that being alone means. It is a very emo song, without being pejorative, but it is true that it represents a lot of this culture. As for the musicality, we are back to alternative rock and hard rock. The guitar here I like a lot, it is very particular since it gives the seal and the signature of this song, you hear the sound of it and you automatically know what song it is, for me that is synonymous of success, that with only one sound we are able to identify a song. The truth is that Green Day has great songs, because there are a few that I am leaving out, for example: American Idiot, Holiday, etc. Undoubtedly a band that marked a stage in the life and music of many, they accompanied an entire generation to grow up and that is something that fans always stay with.
