(ESP-ENG) El hombre de los himnos de estadio | The man of stadium anthems - Musical culture 🎧
Hello friends, good vibes to all.

Music as we know it today has undergone many changes, many metamorphoses throughout recent history. In the sixties, everything revolved around aspirational themes, a desire for the world to be a better place, the ideal that peace was the way forward. The seventies were the complete opposite; I think it was a very disruptive and dark time in music until we reached the eighties. For me, this was the best decade in history in terms of musical production and quality, even though the nineties were truly impressive as well. Why do I say this? Because part of the sound of those years, which is still very relevant today, is the work of a man many may not know: Desmond Child.
I don't intend to write a biography of him, but some of the greatest songs we know today came from him—those tracks known as "stadium anthems." And thanks to one song in particular, which opened the doors for Latin music in the '90s, allowing it to take off, it was also a product of Desmond Child. Let's start from the beginning. A stadium anthem is a song characterized by its energy, ease of learning, and infectiousness, generally sung by huge crowds. Having said that, one such song is "Livin' on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi. This legendary song was written by Desmond Child. Interestingly, Bon Jovi didn't want this song, and it was Child himself who, by making arrangements, including the chorus, which wasn't originally as we know it, ultimately led to the band performing it.

Bon Jovi, Cher, Desmond Child, Steven Tyler.
But it wasn't just Bon Jovi; there are many artists with anthems featuring Desmond Child. Aerosmith with "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)," "Crazy," and "Angel"; Cher with "We All Sleep Alone" and "Just Like Jesse James," among others; Kiss with "I Was Made For Lovin' You" and "Heaven's on Fire," etc. Desmond has been so important to music that the number of artists he's worked with is endless. Some of them are people like Kelly Clarkson, Hilary Duff, Selena Gomez, Alejandra Guzman, the Jonas Brothers, Weezer, Robbie Williams, Cyndi Lauper, La Ley, Bonnie Tyler, The Rasmus, Shakira, and many more. This gives you an idea of who this guy is and what he's done for music. You might have noticed there are many Latin artists, but I've left out one, perhaps the most important: Ricky Martin. It all started with him.
I was telling you about the World Cup. Well, "The Cup of Life" is a Desmond Child production, and it was this song that catapulted Latin music as we know it today. Why? Because before it, there wasn't a solid, established Latin pop movement. It was around '98/'99 when the careers of Ricky Martin, JLo, Enrique Iglesias (who was huge at the time), Marc Anthony, and Shakira herself took off. Shakira's rise is incredible because she went from "Donde están los ladrones" to "Laundry Service," the album that made her blonde and distanced her from that bohemian artist who had charmed everyone. All of this was partly thanks to Desmond Child's "The Cup of Life."

Many believe that everything changed during the World Cup, especially during the final when he performed the song and it was seen by billions of people. But no. It was months later at the Grammys. That performance marked a turning point. That's when the Anglo market, and of course the Latin market, understood the goldmine these artists represented and how to market music as we know it today. To say that Desmond Child is a great pioneer of music and of what many know of it is not an exaggeration; it's a clear indication of the significance of his vision and understanding of this art. We're talking about a man who had hits in many genres: rock, pop, ballads, and in both English and Spanish. As music lovers, I think it's important that we know these stories because songs and the history of this passion of ours are written about them. And many of those songs ended up becoming the famous "stadium anthems."
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos escuchamos en la próxima!
