Dentro de la música de finales de los 70 y comienzos de los ochenta hay una infinidad de bandas y artistas que pudiéramos mencionar pero en mi oídos siempre ha destacado un grupo que sonaba o suena como muy pocos en la historia. Se trata de unos tipos que lograron fusionar una cantidad absurda de géneros en sus álbumes, dígase el R&B, el jazz, funk, soul y un largo etcétera con la finalidad de dar con un sonido bastante único que hoy por hoy no lo tiene casi nadie. Probablemente a mucha gente no le va a sonar estas caras pero estoy seguro que sus canciones si las han escuchado y estoy más seguro aún que cuando sepan cuales son esos grandes temas se van a sorprender. Los traigo el día de hoy porque los considero grandes referencias de la musica de aquella época y sobre todo para lo que vino después en esa década, un ejemplo de ellos les diría los Jackson 5. Así que sin más les dejo un ligero top con lo mejor de estos músicos.

Within the music of the late 70's and early 80's there are an infinity of bands and artists that we could mention but in my ears has always stood out a group that sounded or sounds like very few in history. They were guys who managed to fuse an absurd amount of genres in their albums, such as R&B, jazz, funk, soul and a long etcetera in order to come up with a very unique sound that nowadays almost no one else has. Many people probably won't know these faces but I'm sure you've heard their songs and I'm even more sure that when you find out what those great songs are, you'll be surprised. I bring them today because I consider them great references of the music of that time and especially for what came later in that decade, an example of them I would say the Jackson 5. So without further ado I leave you a slight top with the best of these musicians.

- Boogie Wonderland

Cada vez que escucho esta canción me convenzo que es de los mejores temas jamás hecho en la música y cuando la volví a escuchar mientras escribo estas líneas lo estoy pensando de nuevo. Esta canción es increíble por donde la oigas, desde el sonido, los coros de "The Sisters", la coreografía, los metales, la letra, absolutamente todo en este tema es lo que está bien con Earth, Wind & Fire. Solamente con escuchar como empieza es como un golpe de energía al cuerpo brutal, con esas trompetas a tope, el piano acompañando, es una canción que está hecha para que las disfrutes con todos los sentidos. Después de esto empieza uno de los coros que para mi es de las mejores cosas, es el gancho de este tema, la voz de estas tres mujeres acompañando a Maurice es lo que definitivamente hace que la canción sea lo que es. Muchos recordarán este tema porque fue uno de los soundtracks de una película francesa, de las mejores que hay, llamada "Intouchables" que uno de sus protagonistas está en silla de ruedas y su ayudante se pone a bailar. Esto tiene que ver quizás con la letra, que puede que sea algo que no se le preste atención pero yo si. Nos habla de que no importa si tuviste un mal día y nada salió como esperabas, en la noche hay que dejarse llevar al maravilloso mundo del boogie. Es un oda a la felicidad y al amor realmente. Amigos, escuchen este grupo, es una obra de arte junto a todas sus canciones.

Every time I listen to this song I am convinced that it is one of the best songs ever made in music and when I listened to it again as I write these lines I am thinking it again. This song is amazing everywhere you listen to it, from the sound, the chorus of "The Sisters", the choreography, the brass, the lyrics, absolutely everything about this song is what is right with Earth, Wind & Fire. Just listening to how it starts is like a brutal blow of energy to the body, with those horns at full blast, the piano accompanying, it is a song that is made for you to enjoy with all your senses. After this begins one of the choruses that for me is one of the best things, it is the hook of this song, the voice of these three women accompanying Maurice is what definitely makes the song what it is. Many will remember this song because it was one of the soundtracks of a French movie, one of the best there is, called "Intouchables" where one of the main characters is in a wheelchair and his assistant starts dancing. This has to do perhaps with the lyrics, which may be something you don't pay attention to but I do. It speaks to us that it doesn't matter if you had a bad day and nothing went as you expected, at night you have to let yourself get carried away into the wonderful world of boogie. It's an ode to happiness and love really. Folks, listen to this group, it is a work of art along with all their songs.

- Let's Groove

La cosa con escuchar las canciones de este grupo es que todo sea una experiencia, desde la propia canción hasta los videos. Ver este en particular nos lleva a los principios de los años 80 y honestamente es todo un viaje, la estética, los colores, todo hace que con un par de audífonos te teletransportes a una época que fue dorada en la música. Al igual que en muchas de sus canciones ellos toman mucho en cuenta los metales, esto es extraño porque para la época no era tan común que dentro de este tipo de música se hiciera tanto énfasis y eco en estos instrumentos, si se podían escuchar por allí pero siento que no eral algo común. De ahí a que cuando estos genios incluyeron esto todo sonara tan espectacular. Y los coros amigos, de nuevo es una parte esencial, es como el ADN de su sonido y es que TODOS sus coros son armónicos porque son los acompañantes perfectos; de por si Maurice tenía un poco la voz grave, si a eso le agregas el sonido peculiar un poco más bajo de estos coros pues la combinación es ideal. La letra es básicamente que hay que ir a bailar para agregarle más sabor a la vida, sin mucha complicaciones ni atajos, que el sonido se te meta por los zapatos y bailar sin parar. De nuevo la felicidad y la alegría en las pequeñas cosas, son canciones "sencillas" y es por eso que se convirtieron en lo que son, porque les supieron llegar a todo el mundo con un mensaje simple pero efectivo: bailar y nada más.

The thing about listening to the songs of this group is that everything is an experience, from the song itself to the videos. Watching this one in particular takes us back to the early 80's and honestly it is quite a trip, the aesthetics, the colors, everything makes that with a pair of headphones you teleport you to an era that was golden in music. As in many of their songs they take a lot into account the metals, this is strange because for the time it was not so common that in this type of music so much emphasis and echo in these instruments, if you could hear them there but I feel that it was not something common. Hence when these geniuses included this everything sounded so spectacular. And the backing vocals folks, again it's an essential part, it's like the DNA of their sound and ALL their backing vocals are harmonic because they are the perfect accompaniment; Maurice already had a bit of a deep voice, if you add to that the peculiar lower sound of these backing vocals then the combination is ideal. The lyrics are basically that you have to go dancing to add more flavor to life, without too many complications or shortcuts, let the sound go through your shoes and dance non-stop. Again the happiness and joy in the little things, they are "simple" songs and that is why they became what they are, because they knew how to reach everyone with a simple but effective message: dance and nothing more.

Probablemente la canción más popular y comercial de ellos. Quien no se recuerda lo que pasó la noche del 21 de Septiembre? - cuando decía de que muchas personas habían escuchado la música de este grupo sin saber quienes son pues me refiero a este tema, al ser una canción sumamente viral muchos la comparten y hasta la cantan pero cuando se les pregunta quienes son sus interpretas pues allí falla todo. Pero no pasa nada, lo que importa es que su música siga sonando sin importar que. En las otras dos canciones alabé los metales pero acá es diferente, acá el rol que tienen es mucho más protagónico porque hay partes donde hacen del mismo coro y melodía y eso es algo que me disfruto mucho de ellos, se escuchan allá en el fondo tanto trompetas, saxo y trombón pero de una forma clara. September habla de todo lo que puede hacer el amor cuando se junta con la música, una combinación que es capaz de ahuyentar las nubes grises para que salgan las estrellas en el cielo de esa noche del 21 de septiembre. En esta canción si se ponen un poco más profundos con respecto a estos temas, hablan del alma, de las conexiones y de todo aquello que forma parte para que el amor perdure en el tiempo. Los coros tampoco desentonan, siempre agudos y melódicos para que siempre estés cantando y no te se puedan salir de la mente. Creo que Earth, Wind & Fire es para mi top 10 de los mejores grupos musicales de la historia contemporánea de la música, tanto por sus canciones como por su legado, lo que hicieron Maurice y compañía fue algo impresionante, de ahí a que los setenta y ochentas fueran lo que fue, la cuna de la música.

I think Earth, Wind & Fire is for my top 10 of the best musical groups in the contemporary history of music, both for their songs and their legacy, what Maurice and company did was something impressive, hence the seventies and eighties were what it was, the cradle of music.
