Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town, South Africa!

Welcome to Week 10 / Round 1 of the Hive Music Festival! In weeks 1 to 3 I did some of my softer, more finger-picking, style of original songs. In weeks 4-6 I raised the tempo a bit and started strumming on some more original songs. In weeks 7-9, I picked some original songs that would allow me to rock out as hard as my acoustic guitar allows, and I also showed how I like to play alternative tunings like “DADGAD”.

Now we arrive at Weeks 10 to 12! Yay! South Africa has been suffering from rolling blackouts that we call loadshedding, when the national Electricity Company, Eskom, cannot match the demands of the country. It has been particularly bad over the last few weeks, but I was happy that there was electricity the first (sorry… wait) second time I sat down to sing you the original song for the week!

So, I thought why not be optimistic, and base the three original songs I will be singing you from Weeks 10-12 on a toy that needs electricity, and an amplifier, called a loop pedal? It is the pink one at my feet and it’s something I’m just starting to learn how to use and bring into live performance! It allows me to record a few seconds of music, and then plays that music back, to allow me to play or even record more layers over it. It is the closest I can feel to being a band on my own, to allow me to fill out a song!

The black pedal provides distortion to allow my acoustic guitar to sound closer to an electric one. The blue pedal takes things down an octave to make my guitar sound closer to a bass guitar!

Today’s song is called “Mamela”! “Mamela” means LISTEN in both isiZulu and isiXhosa, the two most widely spoken local languages here in South Africa. It is supposed to give the listener a feeling for how our local Politicians have let the country down through a mixture of incompetence, corruption and focusing on the competition between factions rather than the needs of the people.

It is a song that I like to sing with @clairemobey in our duo called MobeyDick because she adds great harmonies to make the chorus more powerful and rousing like it should be. Claire has just posted a link of a gig where we got to jam “Mamela” with a local kid, Dan Roux, who is rapidly becoming a maestro on electric guitar, so please check that post here as well:

Hola a todos en HIVE, y especialmente a la Comunidad Musical. Me llamo Jasper y os escribo (y canto) desde Ciudad del Cabo, Sudáfrica.

¡Bienvenidos a la Semana 10 / Ronda 1 del Festival de Música Hive! En las semanas 1 a 3 hice algunas de mis canciones originales más suaves, más finger-picking.
