HIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL Week 24 Third Round (ENG-ESP): "Meadowlands", featuring the Pennywhistle!

(Traducción al español al final del post)

Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 24 / Round 3 of the Hive Music Festival!

After doing only original songs for the first 22 weeks, last week I started wearing the “Cover Hat of Shame”. When I started playing music in public, one of the first places I went to was called the Barleycorn Music Club, which heavily encouraged that we try out our original songs on the audience. I even joined the organising committee to put on the little gigs for a while. So, my “cover hat of shame” joke originates from those days! Hahaha!

Like I mentioned last week, I don’t want to just start playing any old cover for the Hive Music Festival! You guys are my friends and deserve something special… a special effort from me! So I thought I would challenge myself like this: My main instruments are guitar and harmonicas: What if I had to ensure that every cover I do for the Hive Music Festival uses a different instrument as well, to test my creativity and ability to learn and play with different new sounds?

And so – this week is the second instalment of a new series of HMF Entries called “Instrument of the Week”. Hahaha! Now I am going to look like a beginner! Which is fine! We are all friends here!

The first instrument was the Kazoo… The second “Instrument of the Week” is the Pennywhistle! Many of you might be familiar with the Pennywhistle or “tin-whistle” from traditional Irish music, but here in South Africa the Pennywhistle is associated with a type of traditional music called “Kwela”!

”Meadowlands” by Strikes Vilikazi

According to the Wikipedia article for the song (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meadowlands_(song)), “Meadowlands” was written during Apartheid, where the Government decided to enforce racial segregation by forcibly removing black people out of Sophiatown to a new township called “Meadowlands”.

This song is typically up-beat sounding like most of Kwela, and the lyrics sarcastically say “We Love Meadowlands”, which meant the white Apartheid Government mistakenly thought the song approved of the relocation program, and therefore decided NOT to ban the song like they did with many more blatant protest songs.

However, the target audience of black people understood the sarcasm, and “Meadowlands” is now one of the most recognised anti-Apartheid anthems in South Africa, and has been popularised by being sung by some of South Africa’s best including Miriam Makeba and Mango Groove!

Here's an example of it by Archie Coker and the Meteors:

The song has been sung in several of South African languages. The version I’m singing is a mixture of Northern Sotho and Tsotsitaal! Obviously, I cannot play guitar and pennywhistle at the same time, so I use a loop-pedal device to quickly record the basic up-beat swinging chord vibes before playing pennywhistle and singing you the song live!

Before I go: Please look out for my weekly cover request post on Thursday! If you make a song request in the comments, and then I attempt the song, you get rewarded with 50% of that post's rewards in HP!

Thank you so much! My main instruments are guitar and harmonicas (mouth organs) - because I have a rack that holds the harmonica in front of my mouth so I can play it at the same time as guitar. It is rare for me to play anything else, but I thought it would be fun to challenge myself for my Hive Music Festival posts and see what else I can do!

Here are a couple of original songs with harmonica on a rack:

You're really doing very well with challenges.

I'd like to see your performance with harmonica & guitar working together

Thanks so much!

Yes, I play guitar and harmonica at the same time on these two posts below. Both were written by me - one is quite folky-love song, and the other is like "angry-blues":

First time I see that instrument, how interesting the Pennywhistle has a sound similar to that of the recorder, thanks for sharing.

Yes they are similar to a recorder! But:

A little more tinny metalic sound, especially compared to some old wooden recorders I have found (one belonging to my grandfather and another at an antique shop - perhaps I should tackle one of them too soon!)...

A pennywhistle can only play in one major scale (the one I played was Dmaj, and the slightly bigger one I showed briefly is a Cmaj). I remember playing recorder a bit in junior school and there were ways to play sharps to allow it to be fully "chromatic".
