Finding Magic in the Monsoon at a Jazz Night

The weekend monsoon rains continued their relentless deluge here in Da Nang, but a little water wasn't going to stop the music. On Saturday night, enthusiastic jazz fans braved the storms for a cozy evening of live music at my favorite local bar. Huddling together as the skies unleashed outside, the unplanned intimate venue brought people closer and created moments of magic.
Normally the bar hosts live jazz nights outdoors in their breezy patio area. But with relentless rain flooding the streets, the band and attendees crammed inside the covered indoor space. The Cozy quarters meant patrons crowded elbow-to-elbow, but the uncomfortably close quarters soon bred camaraderie.
As the musicians began playing smooth digital base-accented jazz, the place filled with swooning music lovers. The sound bounced warmly off the ceilings while rain hammered the roof, providing a NATURAL percussion. Illuminated by the bar lights, the night lent an old-school jazz club atmosphere.
Though unable to get my preferred table, I roamed snapping photos, evoking the mood of intimacy and shared community. The images came out dark, almost impressionistic. I used lightroom to try and enhance the moody, romantic vibe.
The makeshift stage brought people together, both literally and figuratively. Strangers clinked glasses crowded around standup tables. Couples snuggled under umbrellas, absorbed in the sultry music. The unplanned mixing sparked lively conversations amongst temporarily displaced regulars.
Braving the damp night united us in our shared love of jazz. When passion brings people together, magic happens... or at least I think.
Looking back, the community created amid messy monsoon mishaps was more special than any perfect sunny evening could inspire. A little flexibility and positive attitudes prevail even when plans go awry and stormy troubles try to spoil spirits. But with an open mind, camaraderie can flourish like flowers after nourishing rain.
