Attempting Event Photos at a Lively Dance Party

Hi friends,

Well I swung by that cocktail bar Kong72 the other weekend for a big dance party they was throwing called "A Night in Shanghai." As someone who helps them out with marketing ideas and designs, I wanted to pop over and try capturing some photos of the fun since I know event photography can be tricky with all the movement and darkness. The fast dances and colored lights proved pretty challenging! But I think a handful of shots turned out neat with a little editing to pop the drama.

I arrived at Kong72 after the dance tunes were already thumping to find the place packed with folks having a blast showcasing their moves. No elaborate costumes or themes - just happy people gathered to sway and twirl to the groovy live bootlegs. Several retro disco balls spun, sending splashes of color everywhere alongside the neon bar signs, making exposure super complex.

Rotating around the sweaty dance floor snapping pics while avoiding flying elbows got me practicing unposed candid event photography. Trying to catch that perfect hair flip or dab amidst the manic energy pushed my skills.

Most shots turned a blurry mess, but a few frozen moments had solid composition. Framing dancers against the geometric wall art looked cool!

Later, editing the pics in Lightroom, I played with the colors and drama to make the party vibe shine.

Deep shadows and saturated neon made some shots pop as lively memoirs of the bash. But no doubt my amateur skills have room to improve shooting fast movement in nutty lighting. It was a worthy challenge!

But making people look fun and fabulous at parties makes me happy. Maybe I'll upgrade my camera some day for super sharp nightclub shots. For now - here's to more dance floor journeys!
