The Power of Friendship

I used to think that Amara was my favorite person in the world until my phone went off. I had gone to Uncle Didi, one of the tenants in my compound who constantly turned his generator on, and asked him to help charge my power bank. He collected it, promising to charge it when his phone was fully charged as usual so I ran to his house the minute my phone sent a ‘low battery’ notification.

“Uncle Didi!” I shouted, knocking on the burglary proof of his house. He didn't respond until I had knocked and shouted 3 times.

“Treasure, this one you're shouting like this. Hope everything is okay?”

“Sorry sir, I need to get my power bank”

He went in and brought it out then gave an apologetic smile.

“I'm sorry, I forgot to plug it” and he had turned his generator off. I stood there like someone whose ice water was poured over and pondered on the next line of action. Apart from having to work that evening, I needed my phone for company. Especially since my roommate had gone to her family's house for the weekend.

I trudged back sadly to my house and went to lie on my bed, turning and rolling to see if I could get some sleep but it seemed nearly impossible.

I picked up my phone and decided to call Amara instead. The girl usually came with a lot of vibes, plus she had a power bank that I could plead with her to bring over for me.

“My sister took my power bank to the village for a burial this weekend. What do you need it for?”

I stopped tears from rolling down my eyes as I explained the situation to her.

“I'm coming over to your house. How can you be bored when I'm here? We can talk about everything or play a game of cards. No? We'll see movies on my phone instead okay?”

I knew she was genuinely trying to help but deep down I just wanted my phone. I didn't want to see movies or play a game of cards. I grunted an approval since she already offered to come over and went back to trying to sleep.

Amara arrived a few minutes later with some chocolates, it lightened my mood a little but when they were exhausted and we were out of the dry jokes we made as we ate them, I remembered that my phone and power bank were switched off.

“How about giving it out to be charged in one of those phone shops on your street? You could get it a couple of hours later”

There was actually no commercial place close to my house where I could charge my phone and I couldn't take the phone out of my estate just to get it charged. When I told her so, she came up with another idea as if waiting for me to reject the first one she suggested.

“Why don't you ask one of the barber shops around to help you charge? They always have their generator on”

“I'm not doing that. My neighbor's iPhone got stolen because he dropped it in a gaming shop. Thank God they tracked it immediately else it would have been forgotten story by now”

At that point, it was obvious that there was nothing that could be done about the situation. I either had to wait for Uncle Didi to turn his generator on again or follow Amara back to her house and wait till there was power supply, and no one knew when that would be.

“Look, I know exactly what would cheer you up” She went straight to my box and began rummaging through it. I knew she wanted to take me out. She threw a pair of ripped jeans and a big t-shirt at me then fished out an old face cap since my hair wasn't presentable.

“Where are we going?”

“To eat Amala” I nearly screamed in excitement. I rushed into the bathroom to freshen up then hurriedly got dressed and followed her to my favorite Amala spot. Thankfully, there was a socket close to the seat where we were directed to so I quickly plugged in my phone.

After 3 wraps of Amala and about 4 different types of protein, my phone was already at 90 percent. I yelped with excitement, unplugging it and holding it close to my chest. Amara couldn't hide her surprise, especially when I started singing ‘See You Again’ by Wiz Khalifa ft. Charlie Puth.

“All this drama for your phone? Really? Have you even missed me like this before?”

I giggled and gave her a peck on her cheek.

“You know I love you ‘Mara, don't you?” She pushed my hand away in mock anger and stood up to pay for our food.

A well detailed story filled with life. Amara was really a great friend. It's quite funny how all the drama revolved around charging a phone 😅. Glad you found what you needed in a better way.
