A Symphonic Memory

It was 2011, and at that time, the Venezuelan System of Youth and Children's Orchestras was going through a golden age, as the eyes of the country and the whole world were focused on this innovative educational model, which completely changed the way people thought about classical music and, at the same time, took orchestras out of the elegance and comfort of theaters and brought them to every corner of the country, filling the entire population with a spirit of joy and curiosity.

Un Recuerdo Sinfónico

Corría el año 2011 y para esa fecha el Sistema de Orquestas Infantiles y Juveniles de Venezuela atravesaba por una época dorada, puesto que los ojos del país y del mundo entero se cernían sobre este modelo educativo novedoso, el cual cambió por completo la idea que se tenía sobre la música clásica y al mismo tiempo sacó a las orquestas de la elegancia y la comodidad de los teatros, para llevarlas a todos los rincones del país, impregnando así a todo el pueblo con un espíritu de alegría y curiosidad.

The Simón Bolívar Youth Symphony Orchestra is the spearhead of the entire System. At that time, it was conducted by the now acclaimed conductor Gustavo Dudamel, a young man who became the perfect example of the success of this inclusive and social model, which also had high standards of excellence and quality.

La orquesta Sinfónica juvenil Simón Bolívar es la punta de lanza de todo el Sistema, para ese entonces era dirigida por el ahora aclamado director Gustavo Dudamel, un chico que se convirtió en el ejemplo perfecto de que este modelo inclusivo y social era exitoso y que además contaba con amplios estándares de excelencia y calidad.

At that time, seeing Dudamel and hearing the orchestra live was something everyone wanted to experience, so tickets to the concerts sold out quickly. I remember having to queue for several hours to get into the hall, but fortunately I achieved my goal and was able to enjoy a repertoire of traditional Venezuelan music in tune with the chords of a symphonic ensemble.

Para ese momento ver a Dudamel y escuchar en vivo a la orquesta era algo que todos querían presenciar, por lo tanto, las entradas a los conciertos se agotaban con rapidez y recuerdo que para estar presente en esa sala me tocó realizar una cola de varias horas, pero afortunadamente logré mi objetivo y pude lograr disfrutar de un repertorio de música tradicional venezolana en entonada con los acordes de una agrupación sinfónica.

At the time, I didn't realize how significant that situation was, but now, more than 10 years later, I realize that I witnessed a historic event. While today many people around the world spend hundreds of dollars to see this conductor on stage, I was able to enjoy him at that time at an incredibly low price.

En ese momento no sabía lo trascendental de esa situación, pero ahora más de 10 años después me doy cuenta de que presencié un hecho histórico, mientras que hoy en el mundo muchos gastan cientos de dólares por ver en escena a este director, yo pude disfrutar de él en ese momento a un precio increíblemente bajo.

This is a memory full of culture, good rhythm, and great scenes. To top it all off, when the event ended, I had the opportunity to run into another famous orchestra conductor, Christian Vázquez, in one of the hallways of the venue. Like me, he was enjoying one of his idols, but little by little, time would show that Cristian would also become one of the greats of Venezuelan classical music.

Este es un recuerdo lleno de cultura, un buen ritmo y grandes escenas, para cerrar con broche de oro cuando terminó el evento tuve la oportunidad de cruzarme en uno de los pasillos de este recinto con otro afamado director de orquestas, Christian Vázquez, quien al igual que yo estaba disfrutando de uno de sus ídolos, pero poco a poco el tiempo demostraría que Cristian también sería uno de los grandes de la música clásica venezolana.
