Ibibio Students Union: A way of sustaining cultural heritage

Hello everyone! It's another opportunity to be here to share some lovely ideas about how Ibibio people sustained their cultural heritage. There are many ways to preserve culture for many generations, the people thought of how many ways to preserve the cultures, and the best way to do that is incorporate them into school curriculum, before the formal education, Ibibio people used their culture to mold characters of the young people in the society.

Who are the Ibibio People? The Ibibio people are a coastal people in southern Nigeria, who are mostly found in Akwa Ibom State, Cross River State and the Eastern part of Abia State. They are related to the Efik people with similar cultures, behavior and reaction to things. During the colonial period in Nigeria, the Ibibio Union asked for recognition by the British as a sovereign nation.

Today, I want to share more on Ibibio students union rather than Ibibio People, Ibibio Students Union is a body or an organization of students mostly in higher institutions of learning that represents Ibibio ethnic group. Nigeria as a country has over two and twenty ethnic groups, Ibibio students is one those unions with the aim of fostering unity among Ibibio students, supporting academic endeavors among themselves, and promoting cultural heritage of the Ibibio people among students.

Ibibio Students Union maintains the same methods of coronation of chiefs known as "Obong" just as their fathers in the village setting are doing. The coronation is always to crown the new chiefs and Queen into Ibibio Students' Union Council University, Polytechnic or any higher institutions thereafter, they remain Royalty. The union is a platform that creates an ability to transform creative ideas into reality through their conscious teaching of their cultural heritage.

The union in their quests to revive and maintain the spirit of their cultural heritage, they constantly carried out carnival tour in the institutions, the constant tour tent to reawaken the consciousness of the students about our societal norms and values. Ibibio Students Union, University of Uyo chapter celebrated her Ibibio Students Week which they demonstrate different cultural displays ranging from Ekpo culture, dancing display, different games both indoor and outdoor. At the end of the this, thousands of students in the university community were inducted, they were motivated and they found out why they were proud of where they come from.
