Three Tune Tuesday - TTT #100 - Men at Work and Colin Hay

avatar

Wow - its week 100 of Three Tune Tuesday, a great weekly community event started by @ablaze !

I've always really liked Men at Work. Of course I like the song Down Under, who doesn't, but they have a heap of other great tunes too. I hadn't listened to them in a while, and last night I listened to all 3 of their studio albums:

1 - Business as usual (1981) - including Down under
2 - Cargo (1983)
3 - Two hearts (1985)

It was great listening to them all again, and it inspired me to create a #ttt post tonight. The first song I'm going to focus on from Men at Work is Who can it be now - which is from their first album, Business as Usual.

Thats the original video, and I really like it, even though it looks a little dated now.

As can be seen from the dates on their three album listings, Men at Work didnt last too long. They didnt produce any more studio albums beyond 1985. They have toured in various guises though. However, Colin Hay, their front man, continued with a solo career, and has punted out lots of albums, with the last one, Now and the Evermore, coming out last year in 2022.

The next video is Colin Hay playing Who Can it be Now live back in 2007. He is really funny, and his intro to it is pretty hilarious, so I wanted to post this video so you can compare !

And from the video above, you may have now figured out that although Men at Work are an Australian Band, Colin Hay is Scottish - you can really hear it in his accent !

And his acoustic studio version of the song is pretty great too (the follownig video):

This is from his 2003 album man@work.

So considering all I've done is post the same tune 3 times, I feel that I really do have to post one more tune.

This is another Colin Hay tune called Are you lookin at me ? This is from his 2007 album of the same name, and I think its a cracker of a song.

So this is rather self indulgent for me this week, but hey, I thought it worth sharing ! I hope you enjoy them !

Have you got any other fav Men at Work songs ???

Colin Hay is pretty awesome. I got to see him when he was touring with Ringo Starr as part of his all-star band. It was a great show. I think Colin was the stand out artist of that tour for me. I think my favorite song is probably the acoustic version of "Overkill" that he does. It was used on an episode of Scrubs and it worked really well. That or "I just don't think I'll ever get over you". That song is so good too. Nice selection this week!

Wow - I thought everyone had heard Down Under, which was their mega hit, but was likely before your time. Anyway, glad you liked them !!!

I always loved Men at Work in my younger days. I never really followed the band, though, so it's nice to see that Colin Hay is still having a good career and putting out good music. Thanks for sharing these!

You are welcome. I've always liked them - great band. Pity they only made three albums.

I must admit now that although I know the all time classic, Land Down Under, I do not really know their other stuff, so your post was a bit of a revelation... Good stuff, a bit of brass in a song is always good in my opinion, gives it a unique kind of quality that drums, guitar and vocals alone cannot bring..

Are you lookin at me is pretty cool, I like these kind of talking songs, here are a few others of this style I like, both Irish...

You have actually inspired my #ttt post for today now, thanks for that, I will go with these two and one other.... Thanks
