Dirty Sound Magnet - an awesome band I saw live in Edinburgh last week

Its Three Tune Tuesday and I thought I'd make a post about an awesome band I saw playing live in Edinburgh last week, called Dirty Sound Magnet - that I hadnt even heard off before 2 weeks ago.

One of my friends at work said he was going to see the band and asked if I wanted to tag along - so off we popped ! Although quite a young band, they have quite an impressive 60s psychedelic sound across blues and hard rock, with a modern vibe.

They had just released a new live album called Dreaming of Dystopia, and thats what they were touring. The song above is the second track from that album and is also called Dreaming of Dystopia.

Above is track three from the new album called The Tragedy of Men, and is another great tune. Live they were quite incredible, but some of the stuff they were doing was quite out there - like they'd gone on a great acid trip, and hadnt quite come down yet ! You can get what I mean from the track above !!!

They were pretty good at getting into a groove and jamming that out - and again that comes across great in the track above. The guitar player, who is also the lead singer (they are just a three piece), is pretty darn good on the guitar and you can hear that coming across as well on the track above.

As much as I like their new album, what really blew me away about them was how good they were live. I'd go as far to say that they could play the songs better live than the could recorded - and as a musician myself, I dont say that lightly. So I had a look around on youtube and found the track above which is a great example of their live energy. The 3 of them are clearly great musicians and really put a ton of energy into their live work. Their drummer was quite impressive - he was also doing all their sound effects and samples live, which he was triggering seamlessly without missing a beat ! In the video you can see a sampler sitting up next to his right, which is one of the gizmos he uses to do that (the square box with the red outlined squares). And the three of them clearly gel and play well together - it was great to see.

The venue they played in last week was really small. There were probably only about 100 people there, and they certainly deserve to be playing much larger venues. I dont go to see much live music these days, but I'd certainly go and see these guys again if they were in town - I was quite impressed, and I just loved their sound. Young bands just dont sound like this these days - I could hear King Crimson, Jimmy Hendrix, the Doors, and other such great bands, all within their own mix - it was great !

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the tunes - what a great find !

I'm definitely going to check these guys out. I've seen a few bands in the past that are so much better live than they are on their albums. It's always a great joy when you get to experience that.
