Fiction: Happy Music
She seemed impossibly tall, standing up atop the stage. A head of fiery hair, a mouth full of teeth. She was a tongue and she was a wisp of air. She prepared to sing the words to the assembled sea of bodies. Each were indistinct, but they were the same. They were joined to the place, joined to the moment by the movement of nothing more than air. The movement of their bodies were a swell of an ocean, eager to crash against the stage.
Does a song start in the heart, that pumps the blood? Does it start in the lung that expels the air? Is it sculpted by the tongue, the unique shape of mouth, the uneven pillars of teeth?
To the gathered audience, her mouth was a temple in which to worship. Her air, her voice would circulate and resonate before it moved beyond lip into microphone. Mayhap, if the song does not begin in the mouth, does it start somewhere in the language centre of the brain, as a response about some past commotion?
Where it started mattered not among the sweet smells of sap and humid soil, a million beads of sweat awaiting the ritualistic experience as the drum gave the stage-woman a tempo. She stamped a foot against the stage. She smiled. They smiled. Symbiosis commenced.
The woman, adorned in a long dress and artificial light, inhaled. She filled her lungs, borrowing from the output of the trees, and she broke down the fourth wall with a wail that smashed the anticipatory still of the audience like a hammer.
The assembled crowed each took their own share of air from the place. The air circulated in uneven, imperfect drafts, but the dominant swell was that of the stage woman's voice. Her song was borne of sadness, of misery, of horror, of internalised thought. Once hidden away by vague metaphor, that child of meaning come out from behind her skirts and was exposed more and more interview after interview.
The child had grown from a raindrop to a storm. She raged.
It started to rain. People danced with strangers in the evening mist. The song traveled through the audience like a breeze. She was like the leader of some musical army, coordinating their cheers, evoking complex emotional responses in each of them.
All done with the air of her lungs. The air came in as a child of misery, and was transformed within the temple of her creativity into something that transfixed joy to the thousands gathered there.
Exhaling was easy. Letting it out was easy. Taking it in and processing it, that was the hard part. The gulf between her sadness and the happiness it brought to the others was nothing more than a breath. The tear she shed as she sang the last note was nothing more than water, salt, and the very sphere that encompassed them all.
The trees took back their air, ready to give everyone gathered there the next burst of oxygen to experience an encore to life.

One, Jeff Buckley in a disused quarry as a natural amphitheatre in WA, full moon rising above stage, the place ringed with gums strung with fairy lights - beyond magical.
Two, Nick Cave singing Into Your Arms in Melbourne at the Sydney Myer Music Bowl, and everyone, and I mean it felt like all of Melbourne there singing the chorus in unison - absolutely incredible.
Yet they're just stinky sacks of decaying flesh just as us. Everyone could be such a messenger, but only few are able to deliver with potency and enthralling power.
